European car sales analysis June and first half 2017 – models

citroen_c3-2016-new-generationAfter analyzing the car brand sales ranking for June 2017, let’s take a look at sales figures of individual models. The Volkswagen Golf scores its 14th consecutive monthly loss but remains firmly on top of the ranking. The Renault Clio continues to gravitate at its high level, ahead of the Volkswagen Polo, which maintains a surprisingly high level of sales considering its successor has already been revealed and should arrive soon. We’ve seen similar trends at Audi with the replacements of the A3, A4 and A5, but of course the most extreme example is Volvo with the XC60 first generation which gravitates at record heights in the final months of its career. Despite a loss of 9%, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra is back up to 4th place for the first time since last August ( andup from a horrid 12th place in May) because the Ford Fiesta is down into 9th place as deliveries of the new generation are yet to gain traction. The Opel/Vauxhall Corsa cannot benefit from the Fiesta’s demise as it too is down by more than 20% and out of the top-10. That means the Peugeot 208 is now the #3 best selling subcompact car, but even worse for the Corsa: the Dacia Sandero is only just over 400 sales behind, compared to a gap of over 10.000 sales a year ago. The Citroën C3 isn’t far behind these two either.

Fiat_Tipo-2016-sales-forecast-EuropeThe Renault Captur is once again the best selling crossover in a record 5th place for the nameplate, despite a 6% loss on last year. The Nissan Qashqai is stable and keeps its place ahead of the Volkswagen Tiguan, even though the latter shows a massive 45,6% increase on its predecessor last year. After a horrid 20th place in May, the Ford Focus is back into the top-10 and is the best selling Ford since February 2012. The Renault Megane is finally climbing up the charts to #15 even though it loses 1,1% on last year. For the first time this year the Fiat 500 beats its platform sibling Panda for 2 months in a row. And for the first time since shortly after its launch, the Peugeot 2008 (#19) is outsold by the Peugeot 3008 (#18). The latter is a homerun for the French brand, as it’s only 2.000 sales behind the Tiguan (#14) and firmly in 3rd place of its segment. The Volkswagen Passat (#23) continues to sink down the ranking and is now only 13 sales ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (#24), although the latter also includes the coupe and convertible versions. The Fiat Tipo (#26) has a third month of 15.000+ sales in the last four, and is closing in quickly on the Peugeot 308 (#25).

Renault_Scenic-Grand_Scenic-2017-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeAfter retaking the lead of its segment last month, the Renault Scenic (#27) consolidates its position, as both the Citroën C4 Picasso (down 8,3% to #42) and especially the Volkswagen Touran (down 16,5% to #48) are clearly affected now that the fourth generation of the inventor of the segment is finally showing its potential. The Ford Kuga makes a surprising jump at +26,7% to 29th place, outselling its Korean rivals Hyundai Tucson (#36) and Kia Sportage (in trouble at -14,2% in 43rd place). The Mercedes-Benz E-Class (+33,2% in 39th place) and BMW 5-series (+49,7% on its previous generation, #41) show the premium large sedan (and wagon) segment isn’t dead yet and the former even outsells the smaller Audi A4 (down 30,2% in 40th place). In 44th place, the Hyundai i20 is finally showing some hopeful potential at +23,2% but it’s under heavy fire from the new generation Nissan Micra at #45. The Toyota Auris (#46) is clearly cannibalized by the arrival of the C-HR (#50), which is the best selling newcomer. The Fiat 500X is already down by double digits at #53, barely ahead of the segment senior Nissan Juke (#51). For the fifth consecutive month, the Audi Q2 (#61) is the brand’s best selling crossover, edging out the Q3 by just 23 sales.

Volkswagen_Arteon-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe new generation Opel/Vauxhall Insignia is not yet on full steam (down 11,6% at #72), but still does much better than its closest rivals Skoda Superb (-20,4% at #64) and Ford Mondeo (-40% at #109). The Seat Ateca (#80) remains stuck at about 6.500 monthly sales for the last 3 months, while the Skoda Kodiaq (#87) improves to 6.000 sales, ahead of the Peugeot 5008, just outside the top-100 with just under 5.000 sales. The Volvo S90/V90 finally enters the top-100 at #90. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is up to #142 with its highest volume to date (almost 3.000 sales), while the Alfa Romeo Stelvio slightly dips back to #180. The Tesla Model X (#187) is closer than ever to outsell the Model S (#186).

We welcome the new Volkswagen Arteon to the ranking this month with 1.541 sales at #184.

In the year-to-date ranking, the top-10 remains unchanged on May and teh top-5 remains unchanged on last year. Compared to the first half of 2016, the Volkswagen Tiguan and Citroën C3 makes themselves noticed at the front of the pack with a jump from #30 to #9 for the Tiguan and a jump from #32 to #12 for the C3. That means the Focus is out of the top-10 and considering its age it’s unlikely the Focus will return by the end of the year. Its successor is planned for 2018 and will take a new stab at a top-10 position. The Dacia Sandero (#16) outsells the Toyota Yaris (#18) as both have been facelifted recently, the latter a bit more extensively than the Romanian hatchback. The Megane (#24) is closing in on the 308 (#23), while the Tipo (#31) is not only the third placed model for the brand, it’s also on track to sell over 150.000 units this year, a figure last reached by any Fiat compact car in 2003 with the Stilo, and more than 50% better than the best year of its predecessor Bravo.

Audi_A5-S5-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe 3008 SUV (#26) more than doubles up on the volume of its MPV predecessor, while the Kuga (#30) slowly but steadily closes in on the Tucson (#27). Its impressive June performance is not enough for the Scenic (#46) to grab the year-to-date lead in its segment from the Touran (#44) and C4 Picasso (#45), but the three are very close together now. The XC60 (#50) is up by a whopping 34,4% and only a handful of those are the new generation which is only just arriving in showrooms. Its rival Mercedes-Benz GLC is not far behind in #52, but this includes the Coupe version. The Micra (#60) is storming up the charts now that it’s designed for and produced in Europe. The new generation Audi A5 (#88) is closing in on the BMW 4-series (#79). The Suzuki Ignis has had a pretty successful launch in 110th place, especially considering its polarizing design and its somewhat premium pricing. The Renault Zoe shows a nice improvement in 138th place, en route to become the first EV to sell over 30.000 units in a single year. I can’t help but thinking the Kia Niro (#142) should be able to do better than 2.500 monthly sales considering it’s the first hybrid-only crossover in Europe, and I also expected more from its platform sibling Hyundai Ioniq (#174), altough that clearly outsells the Toyota Prius (#194). The Alfa Romeo Giulia (#155) clearly outsells the Jaguar XE (#165), a nice confidence boost for the Italian brand. The new generation Land Rover Discovery arrived in the last few months of the half but still helps the nameplate to a 20% increase in 178th place.

Best selling newcomer is the C-HR (#42) ahead of the Q2 (#63) and Ateca (#66), followed by the S90/V90 (#94) and the Ford Ka+ (#102).

  1. Deserved success for the Car of the Year 2017, the third place of its segment for this year is acquired
Next year the second place of the Tiguan will always be difficult to catch but the 3008 should come closer because it has fallen behind at the beginning of this year

Next year it will be the turn of the new 508 to take its place at least on the podium in its category with the Passat and the Superb.

    1. Yeah, Peugeot made the right decision to turn the imo hideous first 3008 into the most beautiful and exciting (to drive) crossover with a high quality interior. Yesterday I saw the 5008 for the first time and it looks better in real life than on paper. Should be doing fine in today’s world of crossovers/SUVs.

      1. If you add sales of the 5008 to the 3008 (same with and QQ + X-Trail) the result is remarkable.
It’s only because of a fire at the plant of a supplier this Peu cross-over isn’t higher up in the ranking.

    2. Hi Forza,
I agree it is a deserved success for the 3008. Even the always-critical-of-French-cars Top Gear Magazine seems to like its styling.
But I’m afraid you’re a bit optimistic about the chances of the new 508, even though I don’t know exactly what they’re planning and what the design will look like. But looking at sales figures of the Renault Talisman, which is also a great looking car, I think it will be very difficult for the 508 to beat the Insignia for 3rd place.

  2. To sum up Honda’s problems:

    2016 Civic (2017 EU introduction) -14,9% YTD
    2014 Jazz (2015 EU introduction) -4,9% YTD
    2012 CR-V -22,4% YTD
    2015 HR-V – 9,5% YTD

Apart from the Jazz, all cars operate in a growing segment.

  3. The Insignia will probably rise to third place in that segment.
The sales numbers of the Giulia are impressive. Even more so if compared to the Jaguar XE sales!
