After discussing the April 2017 European car brand sales ranking, let’s take a closer look at which individual models are helping their brand succeed or fail. After the freak event in March, when the Volkswagen Golf was not the best selling car in Europe, things have returned to normal in April, although the Golf is still the biggest loser by far in the top-25 wiht a loss of more than 28% on last year. The Golf lost more sales from April 2016 to April 2017 than its rival Renault Megane sold last month (Golf: -13.831 units). And while the Golf no longer sells double the volume of its nearest competitor, it still has a gap of almost 10.000 sales to the #2, as the entire top-3 is down. One culprit for the Golf’s demise is obvious in 4th place: the success of the Volkswagen Tiguan, up 70% to equal its highest ranking ever. Last month’s leader Ford Fiesta is down to 7th place as it’s payback time for its dependence on the UK market, which was exceptionally strong in March, but exceptionally weak in April. The same can be said of the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, down 15% into 8th place. We welcome the Citroën C3 into the top-10 for the first time ever, as it even threatens to outsell its recently acquired stablemate Corsa. The Skoda Octavia is back into the top-10 which means there’s only one crossover in the top-10, as the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Captur are both just outside. The Captur is down 14% but remains ahead of its rivals Peugeot 2008 (#14) and Opel/Vauxhall Mokka X (#25), which are both down by single digits as competition in the segment has intensified by the arrival of new players.
The Peugeot 3008 (#22) takes 3rd place of its segment, ahead of the Hyundai Tucson (#30), Ford Kuga (#32) and Renault Kadjar (#38), which leaves the Kia Sportage (#39) behind. The Toyota Yaris (#27) has been surprisingly stable in sales, but now takes a hit of 19% as it’s just being facelifted. The new generation Seat Ibiza (#33) is just around the corner but the current model keeps up sales. The Fiat Tipo gains another 2 spots to hit its highest ranking at #34 with a second consecutive month of 10.000+ sales. The Toyota C-HR also climbs to its highest ranking at #43, outselling the Auris (#44) and so does the Audi Q2 at #51, celebrating 3 straight months as the brand’s best selling crossover in Europe. Despite its imminent replacement, the Volvo XC60 continues to perform exceptionally well, still leading its segment in 47th place, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz GLC (#95) and Audi Q5 (down 34% to 95th place). The new generation Audi A5 climbs to #74, right on the tail of its rival BMW 4-series. After a brilliant performance in March when it was in 42nd place, the new generation Nissan Micra drops to 86th place. The Skoda Kodiaq enters the top-100 at #96 and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio enters the top-200 at #181, outselling the Lexus NX.
Year-to-date, the Clio already reclaims its #2 spot from the Fiesta, which only enjoyed that position for a single month. The Polo is also closing in, so the Fiesta may be kicked down to 4th place in the coming months. The Octavia leapfrogs the Panda to reclaim 11th place, while the Sandero takes 19th place from the Mokka. The 3008, Leon and A-Class all climb 2 places to the detriment of the Sportage and 3-Series. The Duster claims to positions from the 1-Series and Mini to rise to #34, and so does the E-Class, kicking down the X1 and Auris. In the back end of the top-50, the Touran and C4 Picasso leapfrog the Juke while the Picasso also moves past the 500X. The XC60 gains two spots to #51 and reclaims the segment lead from the GLC (#52). Big gains for the Audi A1, up 8 spots to #58, Q2, up 7 spots to #64, and A5, up 9 to #91. The Fiat Ducato, helped by the start of the campervan season, gains 35 places on the YTD ranking to #118.
