Look-a-like: Chevrolet Cruze hatchback and…

Chevy Cruze

Chevy showed off its new Cruze hatchback today, and it’s a pretty good-looking car, with styling that manages to strike a good balance between an aggressive front and a family-friendly shape, and has the potential to do pretty well for the brand. However, there is no denying that its overall stance and some of the detailing look a lot like one if its closest competitors in the marketplace…

… the Kia Forte5. Sure, the Chevy’s front is more aggressive and its bumper slightly more sculpted, but both have a similar, straight line between the hood and the windscreen, a similar grille arrangement, and almost identical profiles with the exception of differently-shaped C-pillars.

Things are no less similar at the rear, where the Cruze’s tail lamps are almost identical in shape (if not graphics) to the Forte5.

  1. In my opinion new Cruze looks terrible. It’s mix of few other cars ex. old Astra, Kia C’eed, Hyundai i30 and new Megane. Every each compact car I’ve ever seen looks better and I’m glad I won’t see it in Europe 🙂

  2. From that 3/4 rear picture you’re showing, I recognize a familiarity with the Nissan Pulsar. But maybe that’s just because of the pronounced bumper- and roofspoilers.

Anyways, it’s a big step ahead of the previous Cruze hatchback, which looked so out of proportion from being a sedan-turned-hatchback. At least this one looks like it was actually designed to be a hatchback. I wonder if the Americans will start to warm to the concept now.

And about the Kia: the front looks old and outdated and the rear is boring. Both ends are incoherent with each other with the sharp angles of the grille and the inner sides of the headlights vs. the round curves at the rear.

  3. @Paul

Resemblance with the Astra isn’t that strange, because the Cruze has always been related to the Opel Astra. New Cruze looks like the outgoing Astra with a Chevy front. In 2017 the new Buick Verano will follow. Typical GM policy.

The Cruze wouldn’t be an eccentric in Europe, because the majority of C-segment hatchback cars look plane and dull. Giulietta, Mazda3, DS 4, Mégane and Q30 are exceptions.
