US car sales analysis November 2018 – models

After looking at November sales by brand, let us now look at how individual models performed.

Highlights

  • The new Ram Pickup set a new high watermark for the model, passing 50,000 monthly sales for the first time in its long history, and once again outselling the Chevrolet Silverado (according to our estimates)
Ram Pickup

  • Compact crossovers once again shone in the Top 10, in particular Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox, although Nissan Rogue had another poor month, and its sales may yet turn YTD negative before the year is over
  • By contrast, even Top 10-placed sedans continued to see their sales fall, with Toyota Camry and Honda Civic both seeing their sales drop by 30%, pushing the latter down to its lowest ranking in the past year
  • Jeep models (CherokeeGrand CherokeeWrangler, Compass) all enjoyed healthy growth of over 20%, suggesting the brand is in a strong place all across its portfolio
  • Relative to the disastrous performance of most sedans, Toyota Corolla and Ford Fusion both had what one might call these days “excellent” months, with sales rising by around 10%
  • The debut of the 5-set Honda Passport seems to have hurt the demand for the 7-set Pilot, which fell to its lowest ranking in over a year
  • The new Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Jetta continued to build volume slowly, with sales up 10% for both
  • Sales of Nissan Altima continued to slide, suggesting the rollout of the new model is taking its time
Nissan Altima
    •
  • Chrysler Pacifica registered a sales drop of over 35%, almost completely erasing the model’s YTD growth
  • Ford Fiesta recored a remarkable rise of over 60% for the second month in a row, putting the model’s YTD growth into the double digits, but that clearly came at the expense of sales of the outgoing Ford Focus, whose sales fell to their lowest level in over 4 years
  • Infiniti QX60 had a great month, recording its highest monthly sales record ever, just about beating the March’18 figure
  • Sales of Nissan Titan halved compared to Nov’17, pushing the model into the red for YTD 2018 sales
  • Sales of the “normalized” Infiniti QX50 keep booming, but clearly at the expense of its Q50 sister model, whose sales it surpassed for the first time
  • Tesla Model X and Model S continue to benefit from the halo effect of the Model 3, suggesting that Tesla dealers may be having some success in “up-selling” those drawn into the showrooms by the new, small model

New model highlights

  • Audi Q8 and Jaguar I-Pace had their first full month of sales on the market, with the former reaching a very healthy 943 units, while the latter recorded an altogether more modest 165 units
Jaguar_I_Pace-US-car-sales-statistics
Jaguar i-Pace
  • The new Genesis G70 managed a mere 128 units in its second full month on the market, suggesting the new model is far from the runaway success Hyundai was hoping it would be for its nascent Genesis brand
  • Hyundai Kona sales stepped up a level, reaching almost 6,000 units in November, a big rise over the mid-4,000s average recorded in Q3, outselling the Ford EcoSport for the first time
  • BMW X2 seems to have won the battle of the new premium compact SUVs, with sales at around 2,000 per month, compared to an average of around 1,000 per month for Volvo XC40, and a mere 500 for the Jaguar E-Pace
  • Sales of the Subaru Ascent seem to be stabilizing at around 6,000 units per month
  • Sales of the Nissan Kicks topped 4,000 units for the first time
  • Sales of the eco Hondas, the Clarity and its Insight cousin, seem to be stabilizing at around 2,000, while those of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are hovering at just over 1,000 per month
