After discussing the US auto brand sales ranking for June, let’s zoom in on the models ranking.
Top 10 highlights
- With the new Ram Pickup finally on sale, the model is starting to see positive growth, though its gradual introduction means it still lags behind the older Ford F-Series, and the about-to-be-replaced Chevrolet Silverado, which has the most impressive YTD growth of the three at over 10%
- Honda CR-V registered a second month of double-digit growth, suggesting customers are finally taking to the new model, and its downward sales slide has finally been arrested (it lasted 11 months, with only one interruption)
- The CR-V’s rebound was not strong enough to put it ahead of the leading two compact crossovers, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue, though it was enough to get it ahead of the Ford Escape
- Mid-sized sedans keep suffering in the current environment, with the new Toyota Camry seeing month-on-month sales decline for a fourth month in a row, and the other new entrant, Honda Accord, doing even worse – it has now registered double-digit sales declines every month since it came to market half a year ago, and in June was outsold by the about-to-be-replaced Nissan Altima
Top 11-50 highlights
- Jeep’s new and facelifted models keep bringing in the customers, with the new Wrangler and refreshed Cherokee firmly in the Second 10, and the new Compass doing well in the Third 10; remarkably, this comes at a relatively low cost to the older models, with the Grand Cherokee and Renegade seeing relatively modest sales declines
- Other models that continue to enjoy a good run in 2018 include the small pickups Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado, the refreshed Hyundai Tucson (sales up 35%), the new Subaru Crosstrek (sales up 71% YTD), the refreshed Honda Pilot and the new Mazda CX-5 (YTD sales up 40% for both)
- A few models enjoyed strong one-off bounces, which went some way to considerably increasing their YTD figures: the outgoing GMC Sierra (up 67%, now in the green YTD), Hyundai Elantra (up 34%, almost out of the red YTD), Chevrolet Malibu (up 41%), Dodge Journey (up 86%) and, just outside of the Top 50, Nissan Murano (up 59%)
- By comparison, the new Chevrolet Equinox had its first bad month after a remarkable run earlier this year, with sales dropping by over 25% (though YTD it’s still up 22%), while Chrysler Pacifica had its worst month ever, with sales decline of over 25%, almost erasing its YTD sales gains
- Other than the aforementioned Accord, the bad run in 2018 continued for Ford mainstream models Fusion (down 36% in June, 37% YTD) and Focus (down 30% in June, 10% YTD), while the usually down-trending Hyundai Sonata saw its sales figures rebound modestly
- Remarkably, the about-to-be-replaced Jeep Wrangler continues to be gaining sales so far in 2018
- Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Crosstrek continue to post sales growth of over 50%, proving big hits for their makers (and not a moment too soon in the case of the struggling Mazda)
- Sales of Chevrolet Cruze continued falling by double-digits in face of its Equinox brother’s popularity
- Honda Pilot continues to post growth of around 50%, suggesting that Honda’s re-adjusted pricing has succeeded in brining customers back to its large crossover, while the geriatric Nissan Frontier growth of over 60%
- Volkswagen Tiguan L made it into the Top 50 for the first time ever, outselling competitors such as Kia Sportage
Other highlights
- Good times continue rolling for the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLC (sales up over 75% in June and YTD), Mitsubishi Outlander (up 76% in June, 43% YTD), Volvo XC60 and Kia Rio (sales doubled in June, up almost two-thirds YTD), Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LS (sales more then doubled in June and YTD), and Porsche Cayman
- Models that enjoyed a good bounce in June include Ram ProMaster (sales up 87%), Nissan Armada (up 130%), the new BMW X3 (up by half), the facelifted Mazda CX-3 (sales up 92%), and the new Infiniti QX50 (up 41%)
- By comparison, the number continue being poor for Volkswagen’s non-crossover models, the outgoing Hyundai Accent, Lincoln MKZ, the giant Mercedes-Benz GLS, the much-vaunted Jaguar F-Pace, and the once-popular Genesis G80
- The sourced-from-China Buick Envision saw its sales collapse by almost 60%, with trade uncertainty between the two countries potentially playing a part in the decline
New model highlights
- New models in June include the new 7-seat Subaru Ascent, successor to the unloved Tribeca, debuting strongly with almost 2,000 sales,Nissan Kicks, the relatively conservative follow-up to the genre-defining Juke, debuting lower down with a little over 500 sales, and the third-generation Honda Insight, debuting even further down with under 300 units
- Tesla Model 3 sales topped 6,000 units for the second month in a row, once again placing it in the 70s, and outselling both the Mercedes-Benz C-class and BMW 3-series
- Ford EcoSport, BMW X2 and Volvo XC40 all set new sales records, though of the three it’s the XC40 that probably disappointed most, so far being unable to challenge the new X2, not to even mentioned the established X1
- Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio have enjoyed a strong Q2’18, constantly selling over 1,000 units each (though the Giulia did dip marginally below in June)
- Kia Stinger and Hyundai Kona were unable to top their May sales records, but it still managed a healthy total of almost 1,600 and over 4,200 units, respectively
- After a strong start sales of Volkswagen Atlas have fallen to a little over 3,000, less than half of the record month; luckily for the brand, the new Tiguan L continues to sell strongly at around 8,000 units per month
