US car sales analysis February 2019 – models

Kia_Telluride-US-car-sales-statistics

After looking at February sales by brand, let us now look at how individual models performed.

Highlights

  • Good times keep rolling for the new Ram Pickup, up 19% so far this year
  • Toyota Corolla sedan is turning 2019 into a bit of a comeback year, albeit clearly at the expense of its larger Camry sister
  • While the recently-revised Jeep Cherokee continues to see its sales rise, its smaller Compass and  Renegade siblings have not had a great 2019, with sales down 15% and 28% so far this year
  • The edgy Hyundai Elantra clearly does not seem to be landing with the buying public, with sales down by a third so far this year
  • FCA has seen the fortunes of its geriatric models diverge so far in 2019: while the Dodge Journey seems to be once again on the steep incline (sales almost doubled in the first two months of the year), the Dodge Grand Caravan has seen its sales slide by a quarter, and the Dodge Challenger by over a third
  • The new Acura RDX seems to be finding favor with buyers, with sales up by more than a third so far this year

New model highlights

  • New models in February: Kia Telluride and Jeep Gladiator
  • Sales of the Subaru Ascent seem to have stabilized in the 6,000 – 8,000 range – not bad, but probably below what Subaru was hoping for
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross had an amazing February, all but tripling sales of its previous-best month so far, at over 4,000; time will tell whether this is a lasting breakthrough, or just flash in a pan
  • Afer a strong start in 2018, Nissan Kicks seems to be once again selling fewer than 4,000 units per month – decent, but certainly not segment-leading
  • The new Ford Ranger has had a slow start, with sales barely a tenth that of the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma, and not much ahead of the new Honda Passport
  • With sales over 1,300 units the new Lexus UX has has an OK start, but it’s early days still – the coming months will tell how much of a potential does the well-received new model have
  • Audi Q8 continues to hover just under 1,000 – good enough to stay ahead of the soon-to-be-replaced BMW X6
  • Similarly, the new Genesis G70 seems unable to break through the 1,000 barrier, bad news for what many think is the one chance for the fledgling new brand
