US car sales analysis April 2019 – models

After looking at April sales by brand, let us now look at how individual models performed.

Highlights

  • Ram Pickup had another great month (sales up 25%), and is now regularly outselling the outgoing Chevrolet Silverado
  • The new Toyota RAV4 finally hit the market, gaining 10% on April’18 and almost bringing the model back into the black after the outgoing model saw its sales decline each month in 2019
  • After a great 2018 Jeep Wrangler has had a torrid 2019 so far, with sales down by a quarter in April (and 15% down YTD)
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee, by contrast, had a really good April, with sales up almost a quarter
  • The handover from the old to the new model means that sales of Toyota Corolla sedan fell by 27%, pushing YTD sales well into the red
  • The new Nissan Altima finally arrived in full force in April, pushing the model’s sales up almost 60%, and giving the model its highest placement in over two years; unfortunately for Nissan this clearly came at the expense of the Sentra, whose sales fell by 23%
  • Remarkably, the long-suffering Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu both saw their sales rise by around 15%, bringing the models back to black for YTD sales
  • Sales of the outgoing Ford Explorer fell by 40% as the new model is about to hit the market
  • Volkswagen Tiguan L saw its sales once again top 10,000, giving the model its highest-ever ranking
  • Unexpectedly, Hyundai Tucson had a torrid month, with sales down almost a third on April’18
  • Ford Expedition saw its sales double on last year, allowing it to outsell its arch-rival, Chevrolet Tahoe, according to our estimates
  • Chrysler Pacifica and Jeep Renegade continue to have a bad year, with sales down by over a quarter so far in 2019
One model further down the rankings that has been having a great 2019 so far is the new Porsche Cayenne, with sales up by over 70% on this time last year, although it has come at the expense of sales of its baby brother, the Macan, whose sales are down by half so far this year
  • The soon-to-be-replaced Volkswagen Passat saw its sales collapse by 60%
  • The new Hyundai Veloster had another great month, with sales up by almost 70% in April, and YTD sales now up by over 35%
  • Toyota Prius Prime continues its downward slide down the rankings, with April sales down by almost half on this month last year

Volkswagen Arteon

New model highlights

  • New models to hit the market in April include Audi e-tron (253 sales, more than Jaguar I-Pace) and Volkswagen Arteon (a leisurely 78 sales)
  • Ford Ranger sales have topped 5,000 for the first time, although that’s still only a fourth of the sales figures of the segment-topping Toyota Tacoma
  • Kia Telluride and BMW X7 once again saw sales over 5,000 and 2,000, respectively, suggesting the new models’ great March performance was no fluke
  • Sales of Jeep Gladiator are finally stirring, suggesting they may finally take off in May
  • In its second month on sale BMW Z4 still hasn’t cracked 300 sales per month, and while this is barely a fifth of what the first-gen Z3 and Z4 were selling in their prime, even this figure is already half of what the combined Porsche 718 lineup (ex-Boxster and Cayman) achieved
