US car sales analysis – Q3-2021

The recovery of the US auto sales market in 2021 has come to a halt in the third quarter of the year. If the first half of 2021 showed a 28.8% gain on the same period of 2020, Q3 sales were down 13.1%, dropping the year-to-date tally to +13% and it looks like we may end the year in the red again, courtesy of the worldwide semiconductor shortage that has crippled the production and supply of new vehicles. The Detroit Three are struggling more with these supply issues than other manufacturers, all three losing 19% or more while some of their rivals actually managed to improve on last year. As a result, for the first time ever, in Q3 of 2021 more Japanese brand cars were sold in the US than American brand cars.

Utility vehicles (SUVs, crossovers, pickup trucks and vans) are down 12.3% in Q3 and jump to a record 77.1% of the US car market, while car models (sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, coupes and convertibles) are down 16% to just 22.9%. American brands are down 25% in Q3 and lose 6.2 percentage points of market share compared to Q3 of 2020, to 39.1%. Japanese brands are down just 5.3% to gain 3.3 percentage points of market share to 39.9%, the highest since 2009. European brands are down 6.4% to 0.7 of a percentage point of market share to 10.2%. If they can stay above 10% for the rest of the  year, it will be a new annual record and the first time with double digit share. South-Korean brands outperform all others at 9.1% to gain 2.2 percentage points of market share to 10.8%, also on the way to a new annual record.

Manufacturers highlights:

  • Toyota Motor Corporation jumps to the top of the manufacturer ranking and now also leads in the year-to-date ranking. In the first three quarters of 2020, General Motors was ahead by nearly 325,000 deliveries, but so far this year, Toyota has an advantage of 83,000 deliveries. That means GM’s 90-year streak as the biggest manufacturer in the United States is in danger of not getting extended to 91 years. Toyota and Lexus sales are up 1.4% while GM sales are down 32.9%, which makes it the worst performing manufacturer in Q3. Year-to-date, Toyota Motor Company is up 27.9% while General Motors sales are stable.
  • Ford Motor Company was the second worst performing manufacturer in Q3 at -27.6% and it’s outsold in the quarter by Stellantis, itself down 19%. Year-to-date, Ford (-7.2%) is still ahead of Stellantis (+3.4%) by nearly 22,000 deliveries.
  • Hyundai Motor Company is the best performer of the major manufacturers with sales up 9.1%, jumping ahead of Honda Motor Company for the quarter and closing in to within 4,000 deliveries year-to-date. Honda is down 10.9% in Q3 but still up 20.3% YTD. However, Hyundai is up 33.1% so far this year.
  • Nissan sales are down 9.5% for the quarter but still up 20.3% year-to-date, outperforming Subaru which is down 16.5% in Q3 and up 6% in the first nine months.
  • Tesla Motors is estimated to have outsold luxury rivals BMW AG and Daimler AG in the third quarter, thanks to sales up 31.3% for the local EV brand and vs +4.4% for BMW and -16.4% for Daimler. YTD, BMW is still ahead of Daimler with Tesla in third.
