Commercial van sales in the US are down 15% in 2020, but the year ended on a positive note with Q4 sales up 6%. The share of commercial vans of the overall US car market is stable 2.9% of the US car market. Small vans are down 13% this year, while full-sized vans are down 15%.
The Ford Transit sees a 15% drop in deliveries, which keeps its share stable at 31%, while its nearest rival Chevrolet Express is down 29% and loses 2.5 percentage points of share. That model’s sibling GMC Savana is in even greater difficulty at -38%, making it the worst performer in the class. The RAM ProMaster is down 10% to gain share and defend its third place, as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is up 32% thanks to the new generation. That makes 2020 a record year for the Sprinter at nearly 42,000 deliveries and almost 10% share of the class. It’s also the first year ever that the Sprinter outsells the Ford E-Series, which is down 18% this year. After setting a new sales record in 2019, the Nissan NV van is down 24% in 2020, which is its final full year of sales as Nissan is planning to end production of the NV full-size van in the middle of 2021, with sales expected to continue through the end of the year.
In the compact commercial van part of the segment, which accounts for 18% of total van sales in the US (up from 17.6% in 2019), Ford also dominates with 45.6% share for the Transit Connect. Altogether, Ford has a 48.1% share of the commecial van market in the United States with its three models. The Nissan NV200 sees its deliveries decline by 9% after its record year in 2019. The NV200 is stable above 17,000 annual sales for every year since 2015 and above 18,000 annual sales from 2016 to 2019. As a result, it consolidates its second place ahead of the RAM ProMaster City, which is down 19% to a record low annual sales for the nameplate. It has lost sales every year since its peak of 15,600 deliveries in 2016. The Mercedes-Benz Metris is down 7% which makes it the best performer among small vans, but it’s still the slowest seller among compact vans.
