US sales: 2015, models

US-car-sales-ranking-2015-Jeep-Renegade-CherokeeAfter discussing he 2015 US car brand ranking, we’ll now explore the model ranking a bit further. To refresh your memory: 2015 was a record year for the US auto dealers, with no less than 17,5 million cars sold, which was an increase of 5,7% compared to 2014. Cheap fuel has helped trucks and crossovers grow faster than the overall market at +7,7% and +11% respectively, while demand for cars has shrunk by 2,3%. The combined crossover segments surpassed 5 million units for the first time ever, and Jeep has had a nice hand in that increase, but also the Nissan Rogue.

Ford F-seriesThe Ford F-series is still King of the Ranking in the US, although General Motors sells more full-sized pick-up trucks than Ford if you combine sales of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The F-series is up just 3,5% as it suffered from weak sales during the summer months when factories were retooled for the new, aluminium-bodied generation. The Silverado gained 13,4% to top 600.000 sales for the first time since 2007. The RAM pick-up remains third to keep the top-3 all full-sized pick-up trucks, while the best selling car is still the Toyota Camry as it has been every year since 2002. The Toyota Corolla passes the Honda Accord to make it two Toyota sedans above all other cars.

The domestic Big-3 suffered in compact cars not only from cheap fuel and a shift to crossovers, but also from an aging line-up as the Hyundai Elantra (#16) passes the Chevrolet Cruze (#17), the Nissan Sentra (#21) overtakes the Ford Focus (#23) and the Subaru Impreza (#54) outsells the Dodge Dart (#62).

Nissan_Rogue-US-car-sales-statisticsBut the Japanese also gained some ground in crossovers, as the Toyota RAV4 enters the overall top-10 and passes the Ford Escape (#11) and the Nissan Rogue (#13) shoots up 44% to outsell the Chevrolet Equinox (#14). However, the Jeep Cherokee enters the top-20 in 19th place and the Jeep Wrangler is up 4 spots to #22.

The Chrysler 200 (#28) is the fastest growing model in the top-30 at +51,6% as the new generation has finally hit the spot with American buyers, especially in the design department.

Mazda_CX9-2017-US-car-sales-statisticsAlso worth noting is the Mazda CX-5 becoming the best selling Mazda at #50, just ahead of the Mazda3. That corresponds with the brand’s strategy to improve crossover sales as a percentage of total brand sales from 42% in 2015 to 50% in two to three years. The CX-3 (#216) was just in its first year and a new CX-9 (#163) is coming up, so I don’t think it will be a tough target to beat.

To underscore the effect of cheap gas, the Toyota Prius is down 10,9% and six spots to #26, the Chevrolet Volt is down 18,1% to #173 and the Nissan Leaf (#167) loses 42,8% of its volume, although that is also due to the upcoming update with larger batteries and thus a longer range.

Volkswagen_Golf_SportWagen-US_sales-2015How did Volkswagen survive its diesel scandal? The Volkswagen Golf (#73) almost doubles its volume and reaches a sales record in the US at over 65.000 sales. However, bear in mind that this is largely thanks to the name-change of the SportWagen station wagon version from Jetta to Golf. This is reflected in Jetta sales, down 18,5% or a loss of almost 30.000 units to #38, for a net increase of 1.869 sales for the two models combined, which is 0,96%. The Passat (#67) and Beetle (#147) are down 19,1% and 22,3% while the Touareg (#213) remains stable and the Tiguan (#117) is up an amazing 42,7%, thanks to huge discounts on the model after the scandal and subsequent stop-sale order of diesel models hit US dealers.

Fiat_500X-US-car-sales-statisticsThe best all-new model is the Jeep Renegade at #85, followed by the Honda HR-V at #108 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE at #155, although that’s just a facelift and a name-change from the M-Class. The Italian-gened RAM ProMaster City and the Renegade’s sibling Fiat 500X both enter the top-200 at #189 and #196 respectively in their first year.
