The Honda Vigor is a premium sedan that was derived from the Honda Accord. It was sold in Japan through the Honda Verno dealer network from 1981 to 1995, and sold in North America from June 1991 to 1994 as the Acura Vigor. The Vigor was replaced by the Acura TL in 1995.

Acura Vigor Overview

The Acura Vigor was a premium sedan produced by Honda and sold under its luxury Acura brand in North America between 1992 and 1994. It occupied a unique position in Acura’s lineup, fitting between the compact Integra and the larger, more upscale Legend.

Before its introduction in the U.S. as the Acura Vigor, the car was sold in Japan as the Honda Vigor starting from the 1980s. When introduced to the American market, it was a way to bridge the gap between the sporty, entry-level Integra and the luxurious Legend. One of the most distinguishing features of the Vigor was its engine configuration. It was powered by a 2.5-liter inline-5 cylinder engine, a relatively uncommon engine choice. This engine was mounted longitudinally (front-to-back) rather than the more typical transverse (side-to-side) mounting found in most front-wheel-drive cars. The car produced around 176 horsepower.

The Vigor sported a more aggressive, sporty design compared to the more conservative Legend. The interior also reflected a sport-luxury orientation with high-quality materials and features that were advanced for its time. The Vigor was primarily available in two trim levels: LS and GS. The GS trim included additional features like leather upholstery, a power moonroof, and anti-lock brakes.

The Vigor had a relatively short production run in the U.S. It was replaced by the Acura TL in 1995, which became one of Acura’s best-selling models and established itself more firmly in the midsize luxury sedan segment.

The Acura Vigor was generally well-received for its build quality and unique character, thanks in part to the inline-5 engine. However, it faced stiff competition from other luxury cars in its segment, and some critics felt it didn’t stand out enough to differentiate itself from the Integra or the Legend. While the Vigor may not have achieved the same long-standing recognition as some other Acura models, it played a role in Acura’s 1990s lineup and is remembered for its unique engine and sport-luxury positioning.
