Acura CL Sales Figures

The Acura CL

Acura CDX Brief Overview & Generations

The Acura CL is a midsize coupe manufactured by Honda’s Acura brand from February 19, 1996 to 1999, and from 2000 to 2003. It was designed to offer a combination of sportiness, luxury, and performance in a two-door coupe body style. The CL was positioned as a more upscale and performance-oriented counterpart to the Acura TL sedan. Throughout its production run, the Acura CL was equipped with various luxury features and amenities. These included leather upholstery, heated seats, power-adjustable seats, premium audio systems, automatic climate control, and more. As a performance-oriented coupe, the CL also prioritized handling and driving dynamics. The Acura CL was discontinued after the 2003 model year. The coupe market was shrinking in favor of larger SUVs and crossovers, and Acura decided to shift its focus to other vehicle segments. The TL sedan, which shared some similarities with the CL, continued to be a part of Acura’s lineup.

The first-generation Acura CL was introduced in 1996 as a replacement for the Acura Legend coupe. It was offered with two engine options: a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine producing around 145 horsepower and a 3.0-liter V6 engine with approximately 200 horsepower. Front-wheel drive was standard, and a 4-speed automatic transmission was the only available gearbox. The CL’s design showcased Acura’s contemporary styling language at the time.

After a brief hiatus in production, Acura introduced the second-generation CL for the 2001 model year. This version was more refined and featured a sleeker, more aerodynamic design. It was also larger than its predecessor. The second-generation CL was available with two engine options: a 3.2-liter V6 engine producing around 225 horsepower and a high-performance Type-S variant with a 3.2-liter V6 engine that generated approximately 260 horsepower. Both engines were mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
