European car sales analysis September 2015 – models

Ford-Fiesta-Ecoboost-1.0-Powershift-TitaniumAfter discussing the September 2015 European auto brands sales, let’s look at the model rankings. Similar to the brand rankings, the influence of the strong September volume in the UK market is obvious here. Just look at the volume of the #2 Ford Fiesta, the UK’s best selling car, which sold almost 3 times as many times as it did in August. Usually, the Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio are not far behind or even just ahead, but this month the Fiesta pulls a gap of more than 7.000 units to #3, the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, also boosted by UK volume. In September, 60% of Fiesta European sales were the right-hand-drive version (compared to the usual 40%), and for the Corsa the share is also above 50%. Another strong performer is the UK-built Nissan Qashqai, reaching its best ever non-March volume (March being the biggest month of the UK, ahead of September), while the Renault Clio has an off-month.

Despite its UK top-10 finish and my prediction of last month that the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka would outsell the Renault Captur this month, the little French crossover has somehow managed to stay ahead, albeit by just 700 units in 15th place vs. 18th for the Mokka. The Nissan Juke at #28 is also boosted by its home market and closes in on the Peugeot 2008 in 25th place. The Juke also passes the 500.000 cumulative sales milestone in September, needing exactly five years to get there.

After its stellar top-10 finish last month, the Skoda Fabia drops out of the top-20, but still grows almost 50% on the previous generation in the same month last year. The UK is the second biggest market in Europe for the BMW 3-series and 1-series, which helps these models move back ahead of the 2-series Active Tourer, down to #37.

Hyundai_Tucson-new_generation-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Volkswagen Tiguan in 24th place somehow manages to boost its volume by 65%, perhaps from sell-out pricing of the soon-to-be-replaced, already over 7 year old model. At Hyundai, the outgoing ix35 (#65) is in no hurry to make room for the new Tucson (#68), although it has started its decline this month. However, the Renault Kadjar is already storming up the charts, now moving into 77th place already ahead of the Peugeot 3008 (#79) and Mazda CX-5 in 84th place. Its slightly larger cousin Nissan X-Trail also keeps improving in 88th place, now clearly ahead of the Mitsubishi ASX and Outlander and the Toyota RAV4.

The Fiat 500X moves past the 500L in 49th and 51st respectively, while the Jeep Renegade remains stuck around that 86th place. The new generation Mazda2 helps the model zoom into the top-100 for the first time in 3 years at #75. The Opel Karl/Vauxhall Viva twins still haven’t broken into the European top-80, behind the Kia Picanto in #76 despite showing a strong volume boost in September.

Jaguar_XE-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Jaguar XE is boosted by its home market and moves into #117, while its cousin Land Rover Discovery Sport continues to underwhelm in #127, despite outselling the Range Rover Evoque (#131) for the first time. It’s also worth mentioning the Evoque has hit the 200.00 cumulative European sales milestone this month. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is already not far behind in #137, moving past the Porsche Macan in #140 and the Lexus NX in #143.

Renault-Espace-new_generation-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Renault Espace also slightly disappoints, seeming unable to crack the top-140 and the 2.500 monthly units barrier. It has moved just past the Seat Alhambra and VW Sharan in #151 and #153 repectively, but has been leapfrogged by the new generation Ford S-Max, already in 139th place. Similarly, the very promising Volvo XC90 has dropped from #126 in July to #155 in September, clearly outsold by the Audi Q7 in #129. I had expected the Volvo to do better than the Audi, but perhaps it’s restrained by limited supply, especially from the highly demanded T8 Plug-In hybrid version.

January – September 2015 sales analysis

Its strong September volume has helped the Ford Fiesta cement its #2 spot for the year, while the Renault Clio’s 3rd place is now clearly under attack from the Volkswagen Polo. It will be an interesting battle in the fourth quarter, to see if VW can put two models in the top-3 despite the recent scandals with its diesel- and now also gasoline models.

Ford-Mondeo-new_generation-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe model changeover from Hyundai ix35 to Tucson gives the Ford Kuga a chance to move past, but not yet this month, as it’s still in #42, right behind the ix35. Underscoring the troubles of the midsized segment if you’re not the Volkswagen Passat, the Ford Mondeo drops from #58 at the end of August to #60, unable to move past the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia and already more than 100.000 units behind the Passat.

At Suzuki, the Vitara (#120) has moved past the S-Cross (#129) year-to-date, with the Celerio not far behind in #138, having passed the Seat Mii (#140) this month.

  1. Hello Bart,

Concerning the Renault Espace, I know it is currently selling better than Renault expectations in France, showing that Renault is able to sell some 40k€+ models. (which has not been the case for a long time)
Concerning Europe sales, I am not sure we can speak of “disappointment” since the model is not sold in the UK and is therefore disadvantaged when comparing it with the S-max.
At least it sells more than the Kia Sorento!

It will sadly be the same case for the upcoming Talisman, that won’t be available in RHD countries.

    Thanks again for your work,

  2. Hi d3ns,
I guess you’re right that not having RHD available is an issue for some models, especially in a UK-heavy month like September, and that could also have been the reason for the strong showing from the S-Max.
And indeed, doing better than the Sorento is actually not that bad, considering the popularity of SUV vs. MPV.
I really hope the Talisman hits a sweet spot, because I like its looks and the segment desperately needs some counterweight against the Passat, where the Mondeo has miserably failed.

  3. Guys, the (fabulous) Espace had a 3500+ October.
    So we’re getting there 😉
According to Renault Q4 will show a sales increase due to a better productmix.

But the 60,000, 70.000 annual cap of years ago will be difficult to reach.
Unless China and the RHD (UK/Ozzieland) nations will be covered.
The UK once was the 2nd best market for the Espace II and III.

Given that the Espace and Talisman share quite some bits and pieces the economies-of-scale will be alright.

    Other than that:
    Bart, your website is outstanding!!

    1. Hi RickM,

thanks for the compliment. I’m glad you enjoy it!

Good to hear the Espace is picking up steam. Perhaps Renault has been too busy figuring out how to make enough Kadjars to satisfy the demand for that model. You’re right that those figures won’t come back for the Espace, even if it’s just because the segment as a whole has significantly shrunk. There’s now plenty of 7-seater mid-sized MPVs that offer better fuel economy. I think Renault has understood that well with the Espace. The upcoming Grand Scenic should satisfy the needs of people looking for a spacious a family hauler, and meanwhile the Espace is more of a stylish upscale model for the French, who’ve realized they won’t beat the Germans at their own game: making large sedans (and the hatchback Vel Satis didn’t work either). Their only way to sell a large French car is to make a stylish non-sedan that offers something the others don’t.

  4. I doubt that the Talisman can take a bite out of Passat sales. Without the UK ( which is a huge D segment market ), without Germany ( Passat uber alles ) and with a home market where no one really buys cars this size anymore, they’ll be lucky if they can manage to get to number 3 behind the Insignia.

I have to say though, geez, the Mondeo IS bombing, isn’t it? I barely see any ( estates only so far ). It also looks too close to the old one imo ( except for the front ), and the fact that it took them forever to bring it to market surely made a dent. Add the new S Max and the upcoming Edge to the mix, and things don’t look that bright for the Mondeos future in the EU.

    1. Hi Tuga, I guess your right on all counts, both with the Talisman and the Mondeo.
The Germans won’t buy a mid-sized French car, and the Kadjar will surely cannibalize it in France and other Southern European countries. Somehow the Scandinavian countries are quite fond of the Toyota Avensis, behind (and in Finland even ahead of) the Passat.
And indeed, from the rear 3/4, the Mondeo is hard to distinguish from the old one. Although the Passat has proven that doesn’t necessarily have to hurt its potential. I think it’s also taken them too long to bring to the market, I guess some once-loyal Ford buyers have picked something else in the meantime. That’s bad news for Alfa Romeo and Honda, which are both taking forever to launch crucial new or replacement models in Europe.
