European car sales analysis October 2019

In October 2019, European car sales continue to recover from their WLTP induced dip last year, with a 9,6% increase in sales, after a 7,1% drop in October 2018. This brings the year-to-date tally almost back into the positive at -0,7%. Like last month, VW Group and Renault-Nissan are the big winners compared to last year, because they were also the big losers a year ago, being least prepared for the WLTP fuel efficiency and emissions testing procedure that kicked in at September 1st, 2018. Almost all EU countries posted increases in October, with the exception of Cyprus and the UK. Four of the five major EU markets showed strong improvements, with Germany (+12,7%), France (+8,7%), Italy (+6,7%) and Spain (+6,3%) in recovery mode, while deliveries in the UK were down 6.7% on Brexit-related uncertainties.

Sales of car models (hatchback, sedan, stationwagon, coupe and convertible) were stable, which means their share is down to a new low of 53,6% share. Crossover and SUV sales were up 21,4% to a record 39,9% share, up 5 percentage points on last year and up almost 10 percentage points on 2017. MPV sales were up 5,9% to a stable 6,4% of the European car market. Within these figures, sales of EVs and PHEVs are up 46% in October to 3,9% of the total market, with EVs up 26% and Plug-in Hybrids shifting into a higher gear at +76%.

October 2019 Manufacturers

The growth- and decline rates are heavily impacted by the WLTP issues from last year, as Volkswagen Group makes very clear with a 35% increase on October 2018. PSA in 2nd place is down 3% as it didn’t suffer any big losses last year, while Renault-Nissan Group is in comeback mode at +12%, but it’s still down 3,4% on two years ago. Hyundai-Kia is up an impressive 8,5%, and Toyota Motor Corporation shows an even more impressive 11,7%. That allows Toyota to move past FCA which is down half a percent for the month, which doens’t help the manufacturer recover from its 10,6% loss year-to-date. Mazda is in good shape with a 22% gain, but once again Tesla is the big winner with sales up 2,5-fold. Biggest losers are General Motors, down to a mere 95 deliveries, Subaru, down by more than 20% once again, and Aston Martin down by over 30%.

October 2019 Brands

At brand level, Porsche more than quadruples on its depressed sales of a year ago to return to the black for the year, as do Audi and VW, up 68% and 33,2% for the month and both now also back into black year-to-date. Lexus is a big winner with ales up nearly 45% thanks to the new UX and ES, while Seat and Mazda show nice increases of over 20%. Peugeot is back into 2nd place where it was in the first two months of the year, but is too far behind Ford to threaten the American brand’s #3 spot for the full year. Opel/Vauxhall is in serious trouble after axing its two smallest nameplates Karl/Viva and Adam, with sales down 23,8% and out of the top-10 for the first time in at least 20 years.

October 2019 Models

Porsche_Cayenne-third_generation-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeLooking at the models, we find Volkswagens in three of the top-4 positions, including the top-2. The Golf is unphased by the upcoming arrival of the new 8th generation, while the Tiguan gains 36% to jump to the 2nd place it also held last July. The new generation Renault Clio is picking up steam, with 2/3 of its European sales in October coming from the new model, which helps the nameplate stay ahead of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta and the also new Peugeot 208. In 7th place we find the Renault Captur thanks to sell-our deals on the outgoing version, as its tally includes just about 2.000 deliveries of the all-new second generation. The Nissan Qashqai shows an impressive improvement on October 2018, but that’s because its sales tanked last year after WLTP kicked in. The Dacia Duster is down into 13th place but still shows great strength and outsells the VW T-Roc in 14th place. The Toyota Corolla moves up another 3 spots on September to grab 18th place, while the Ford Kuga is showing a nice gain at +25,7% in 21st place. The Citroen C5 Aircross jumps 20 spots on September to #43 and outsells the Renault Kadjar, Kia Sportage and Skoda Karoq, as well as its smaller sibling C3 Aircross in 49th place, which means it’s back ahead of its platform mate Opel/Vauxhall Crossland X for the first time since last April. Most Audi, VW, Seat and Porsche models show double digit growth on a depressed month last year, but the Porsche Cayenne sets a new all-time record for monthly deliveries in 114th place with over 3.500 units.

Best selling newcomer (<12 months) is the VW T-Cross in 22nd place ahead of the Skoda Scala in 74th place, the Mazda CX-30 in 103rd place, the DX3 Crossback in 125th place, the Skoda Kamiq at #148, the Tesla Model 3, down from #12 in September to #154, the Audi e-Tron at #160 and the Lexus UX at #161.
