European car sales analysis November 2020 – models

After looking at the manufacturers and brands rankings for November, let’s take a deeper look at car sales by model in Europe. The Volkswagen Golf’s leadership continues to erode despite the new generation, and at -32% it suffers its deepest drop since last June. The Golf still manages to hold a 5,000 sales lead to the #2, which surprisingly is the Toyota Yaris, breaking its ranking record thanks to the new generation and strong sales of its hybrid version. The previous highest ranking for the Yaris was a #4 spot in September 2018. It beats the Renault Clio by 450 sales as the French hatchback sees its sales drop by 18.8%. September’s #2 Opel/Vauxhall Corsa is in 4th place ahead of its platform sibling Peugeot 208 and that model’s crossover cousin Peugeot 2008. The 2008 also hits its highest ranking, its previous best was #7 last August. This is also the second time the little lion is Europe’s best selling crossover, just ahead of its main rival Renault Captur. The Ford Focus (+11.7%), Dacia Sandero (-2.2%) and Skoda Octavia (-12.4%) complete the top-10, which means for the second consecutive month Volkswagen has only one nameplate in the European models top-10 which is also the second time since at least 2010 and potentially since 2008. The T-Roc is in 11th place (-5.8%), the Polo is 14th (-30%) just ahead of the Tiguan (-42%).

The Fiat Panda (#13 with stable sales) and Fiat 500 (#16, +10.2%) are back in the top-20. Best selling luxury car is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class at #12 (-12.7%), ahead of the BMW 3-Series (#19, -7.4%) and Volvo XC40 (#23, +46.5%). In its first month of deliveries, the XC40 EV has a take rate of 11.4% and the PHEV has a take rate of 32% which means electrified versions are almost half of XC40 sales, a take rate that should only increase in coming months. Best selling EV is still the Renault Zoe (#32, +217.8%) ahead of the Volkswagen ID.3 (#36) with the Tesla Model 3 in 72nd place (-36.7%). In December, EV and PHEV deliveries are expected to peak as manufacturers are looking to reduce their average CO2 emissions to avoid or reduce penalties for the 2020 calendar year. For example, VW is expected to register a great number of ID.3, ID.4 and other EV models, regardless of whether they’re already sold or not. The company won’t hit its emissions target this year and thus each additional EV or PHEV registered reduces its penalty. Tesla obviously doesn’t have to worry about fines, and in fact it receives a huge amount of cash from FCA for pooling their fleet emissions in order to reduce the penalties for the latter. However, Tesla has struggled with COVID-19 related supply issues from its factory in California and has delivered fewer vehicles in Europe this year. A shipment of Shanghai-made Model 3’s should help the brand finish the quarter with a bang.

Other great performers are the Nissan Juke (#82, +243.5%), the Skoda Kamiq (#52, +79.9% on what was its second month of deliveries last year), the Kia Niro (#48, +52.7%) and the Mercedes-Benz GLE (#82, +46.9%). The GLE is down 199 deliveries on what was a record month for the nameplate in October. We see record sales for the Mercedes-Benz GLB (#79) and for the second consecutive month the EQC (#126), as well as the Porsche Taycan (#136), now the brand’s #2 selling model not far behind the Macan at #132.

Models in the top-100 that are struggling are the Ford Kuga (#43, -59.5%), not only due to artificially high unsold registrations of the outgoing model at the end of last year, but also because of a production stop for its PHEV version. The Kia Sportage (#95, -49.8%) is due for a redesign, as is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (#64, -45.7%). The Opel/Vauxhall Astra (#47, -45%) and Hyundai i10 (#85, -42.2%) have recently been facelifted and redesigned, but are struggling to find traction.

Year-to-date, this month’s strong performance helps the Toyota Yaris leapfrog the Volkswagen Polo for 9th place. The Peugeot 2008 moves ahead of the Volkswagen Tiguan for overall 15th place and second-best crossover. The Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class jump past the Toyota C-HR for #30 and #31 respectively. The BMW X1, Renault Zoe and VW Up! win 4 places on their YTD ranking of last month, to #42, #37 and #75 respectively, while the VW ID.3 is up 13 places to #120, which means it will finish its first partial year of just 4 months of sales in the full-year top-100.

Newcomers

Best selling newcomers (<12 months) are the Volkswagen ID.3, down 7 places to #36 in its third month of sales, ahead of the Mazda MX-30, up 23 to #118. The Toyota Proace City Verso is up 3 places to #161 and passes the Polestar 2, down 2 to #162. The Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Life is up 14 to #166, Land Rover Defender is down 8 to #177, followed by the Suzuki Across, up 58 to #194, the Citroën C4, up 43 to #202 and the Honda e, up 8 places to #208.

  1. If December’s sales of Yaris are as good as its November sales, Yaris have a real chance to end the years as the 5th best selling model in Europe for 2020.

On other hand Ford is going to have huge troubles. Focus and Fiesta are still Ford’s best selling models and SUVs on which Ford counts so much are not doing great at all. Puma is selling well, but not good enough to compensate the freefall of Kuga, Ecosport, Edge, Mondeo and all the passenger vans.

Something’s wrong with Opel too. Corsa is at 4th place and the next Opel’s model is on 44th place. Corsa is responsible for almost 50% of annual Opel sales this year, which is strange, because Opel has never been a 1-2 model brand.

I’m surprised to see Fiat Panda and 500 doing so well, considering how old models they actually are.

    1. Because Opel brand image is getting weaker every year and also the fact that their new models are and will be rebadged french vehicles doesn’t help.

IMHO, Opel will be the semi low-cost brand of PSA along with Citroen in the near future to compete with the new Chinese car brands.

    2. Volume per se is not a smart strategy. Example VW. Stellantis CEO Tavares key metric is margin, profitability per unit sold. It’s one of the areas PSA excels. Opel lost >40% of its volume in H1 2020, a dramatic event by all standards. But guess what? Opel / Vauxhall made €300 mio PROFIT despite the sales collaps. EU competitors such as VW, Renault, Ford, Fiat, Benz en BMW lost billions.

In H2, the duo 208/Corsa – and you know under the skin they are identical – sell 35.000 to 40.000 units per month. That’s a profit generating business in the notorious difficult B segment.

Don’t underestimate the Grandland’s performance either. That model shares stuff with blockbuster 3/5008, the popular C5 AC and the (very) high margin DS7.

Idem the Crossland and C3 AC. Identical platforms, drivetrains and component. 200.000 units per year combined with PSA’s efficiency means ka-ching.

Undoubtedly successful will be the Mokka. Why? Check the Puma. Indication: All 2021 Mokka EV’s for the German market all already sold.

      1. “Opel / Vauxhall made €300 mio PROFIT despite the sales collaps.”

Because Opel/Vauxhall doesn’t need to spend funds in R&D as their cars are all french rebadges, this is not rocket science. The french develop the technology and Opel use it for free. Voilà! Happy new year

      2. That’s hilarious propaganda yes, because we all know that all the new Opels are based in french technology (PureTech and HDi engines, EMP1, EMP2, Automotive Cells Company, a JV between PSA and Total, etc.)

But you seem to a be a fanboy of PSA.

  2. @BryanR: And sure, Opel/Vauxhall cars will be based on the even wider catalog of Stellantis, as they have been based on global platforms of GM.
