European car sales analysis November 2019

In November 2019, car sales in Europe marked a third consecutive month of growth, preparing to finish the year with an increase if December is up by 3,7% or more. And considering December 2018 showed a WLTP-induced dip of 8,6%, that is very likely to happen. European consumers and businesses have taken delivery of 14,39 million cars in the first 11 months of 2019, a decrease of just a quarter of a percent. Of the five major EU countries, only the UK posted a sales decrease in November (-1,3%), while Germany (+9,7%), Spain (+2,3%), Italy (+2,2%) and France (+0,7%) showed strength. Year-to-date, the picture is less positive, (-5,7%) and the United Kingdom (-2,7%) in the red the most while Germany (+3,9%) is the only large market that recorded growth so far in 2019.

Sales of car models (hatchback, sedan, stationwagon, coupe and convertible) were down 2,4%, but their share is up slightly to 54% from last month’s of 53,7% record low. Crossover and SUV sales were up 15,8% but their share slightly down by one tenth of a percentage point from their record of 39,9% in October. MPV sales were down 0,7% to a stable 6,3% of the European car market. Within these figures, sales of EVs and PHEVs are up 44% in November to 4,5% of the total market, with EVs up 23% to 2,4% share and Plug-in Hybrids shifting into a higher gear at +80% to 2,2% share. Year-to-date, plug-in vehicles now hold a record 3,3% share of the European car market, up from 2,5% in 2018.

November 2019 Manufacturers

As we’re getting further away from September, which was a shock month in 2018 due to the WLTP fuel efficiency and emissions standards, and that means its influence on the sales charts is diminishing. Volkswagen Group’s 15,3% increase is less than its growth rate in October but still artificially high.  PSA in 2nd place is down 6,9% and is under threat from Renault-Nissan with less than 14.000 sales between them. Toyota Motor in 9th place and Daimler AG in 4th place are the second and third biggest gainers in the manufacturers top-10, which allows Daimler to leapfrog BMW AG which outsold it in September and October. Daimler remains in 6th place for the year so far. Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles continues to struggle with another loss on an already depressed November 2018, which means it now can feel Toyota Motor breathing down its neck. Mazda is the biggest winner in the top-12 which it enters by leapfrogging Tata Motors and Suzuki, the latter of which is in major trouble as the biggest loser among relevant manufacturers in Europe, with a 21,1% decline. Suzuki remains in the black for the year so far, though. Tesla Motors is once again the biggest star in the manufacturers ranking, more than quadrupling its sales and outselling Honda in Europe. And December promises to bring new records for Tesla in Europe. SAIC MG scores its 6th four-digit score this year as the rollout of the ZS EV across mainland Europe has started, and it too prepares for a record December.

November 2019 Brands

At brand level, Volkswagen and Renault both show healthy double digit gains, but this hides an uncomfortable truth for the French brand which is uncovered when comparing November 2019 with the same month 2 years ago: whereas VW is already back up 7,5% on its performance in November 2017, Renault is still down by a harsh 17,9% in the same comparison, because it had a steeper fall in 2018. Ford is back up to #3 ahead of Mercedes-Benz and that pretty much also seals that position for the full year, as Peugeot now appears too far behind to make a threat in December. Skoda is back ahead of Toyota for the first time since August and that allows it to distance the Japanese brand in the YTD ranking and even surpass Audi to claim 8th place for the first 11 months. Opel/Vauxhall is once again the big loser in the top-20 at -21,1% as new owner PSA is canceling models that are not yet on its own platforms, most notably the Adam, Karl/Viva and Mokka X. Smart shows a healthy 58,5% gain as it is offloading petrol-engined versions before turning into an EV-only brand. As a result, the brand scores its highest monthly sales in Europe since at least 2006 and possibly ever. Porsche is up more than threefold, on one hand as a result of a WLTP-induced artificially low November 2018 but also thanks to strong sales of its SUVs. The brand is on its way to another record year in Europe. Lexus and DS show impressive double digit gains, while Jaguar is down by double digits, and Alfa Romeo is back in the red after a positive month in October.

November 2019 Models

Ford_Focus-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeLooking at the models, we find Volkswagens in three of the top-4 positions for the sixth time this year and the second month running, but the Renault Clio is back into its #2 spot behind the Golf, with the Renault Captur in 5th place to make the top-5 exclusively for these two brands. The Tiguan gains 32,6% to hold on to its position as Europe’s best selling crossover (when including the 7-seat Tiguan Allspace), but the Ford Kuga is the best performing crossover in the top-60 because the outgoing version is sold at discounted prices to prepare for the arrival of the new generation, similar to the Captur, of which the new generation already makes up part of its total deliveries in November. After already breaking its full-year sales record before November even started, he Dacia Duster scores its third top-10 and its sixth top-12 finish of the year, and it has already sold nearly 200.000 units in the first 11 months, an incredible success for the French-Romanian crossover. The Sandero on the other hand is down for November, but also still on track for another record year. The Ford Focus (#21) and Toyota Corolla (#23) are set to have an interesting battle next year behind the 8th generation Golf in the compact car class.

Further below, the Citroën C5 Aircross at #66 is back behind its sibling Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X (#59) for the first time since June, but ahead of the smaller Citroën C3 Aircross for the second month running. The Peugeot Rifter at #84 reaches 5.319 sales, a figure it and its predecessor Partner Tepee have never before seen in Europe. The BMW X5 has already sold more units in the first 11 months of 2019 than any full year since 2009 and its rival Porsche Cayenne is set to break its all-time annual sales record in Europe, after setting a new monthly record in October and subsequently its second-best ever month in November. Another large SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLE scores its highest sales month since it was renamed in 2015, and even the highest month since October 2012 when it was still called the M-Class.

Best selling newcomer (<12 months) is the VW T-Cross in 20th place (up 2 for its second top-20 finish after the 18th place last August), ahead of the Tesla Model 3 at #50 (up 104 on October but still below its record 12th place in September), the Skoda Scala in 69th place (up 5), the Skoda Kamiq at #148 (up 50), the Mazda CX-30 in 104th place (down 1), the DX3 Crossback in 143rd place (down 18), the Lexus UX at #166 (down 5) and the Audi e-Tron at #175 (down 15).
