European car sales analysis May 2017 – models

Dacia_Sandero_Stepway-2017-European-car-salesAfter looking at the May 2017 car brand ranking in Europe, let’s discuss sales figures of individual models. The first thing to notice is that the market leader Volkswagen Golf scores its first single-digit loss since last January, after 3 months with double digit losses of which April was the worst with a decline of 28,3% (or almost 14.000 sales less than April 2016), although it must have hurt more that the Golf was outsold by the Ford Fiesta in March. The facelifted version is now fully available and VW’s compact hatchback (and station wagon) can continue its dominance of the European car sales charts. In May its smaller sibling Polo was in 2nd place, just ahead of the Renault Clio, both above 30.000 sales for the second time this year. The Polo will be facelifted later this year, the Clio has just been freshened. Meanwhile, the new generation Fiesta is just entering dealerships across Europe and should start to make an impact later this year. For now the Fiesta is stuck in 4th place, ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, the biggest loser in the top-10 at -8,2%.

Peugeot_2008-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeFor the third time in five months the Nissan Qashqai is the best selling crossover/SUV in Europe, thanks to a 10% increase, while the Volkswagen Tiguan more than doubles up on a particularly low figure in 2016, when the previous generation was in its last quarter of sales before the new generation arrived. The Dacia Sandero makes a surprise entry into the top-10, its highest ranking ever, and it does so with a margin of 3 sales over its rival Citroën C3, which is up 84% on its previous generation last year. That leaves the Opel/Vauxhall Astra out of the top-10 for the first time since February 2015 when the new generation was just arriving in dealerships. For only the second time this year the Fiat 500 outsells its sibling Fiat Panda at #14 and #15 respectively. For the first time since its lauch, the once-dominant leader of the small crossover segment Renault Captur (#21) is outsold by both the Peugeot 2008 (#16) and the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka (#19). The facelifted version was not yet available in May, which explains the diminished demand for the Captur.

The Ford Focus scores its lowest ranking since its launch in 1998 with a 20th place. As the new generation won’t arrive until next year, the model may sink further down the ranking later this year. It still manages to outsell the Renault Megane, whose supply issues have been resolved but who doesn’t seem to deliver on its promise of challenging the Astra for the #2 spot of the segment. It probably doesn’t help that Renault launched the new Scenic not long after the Megane, as that model has reclaimed leadership of its segment for the first time since last December, before its supply issues started.

Peugeot_3008-2017-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Peugeot 3008 (#26) not only holds on to third place of its segment, it also threatens its sibling 308 (#25) with just 8 sales separating the two models. In 27th place, the Fiat Tipo breaks its ranking record again and sells over 15.000 units for the second time in three months, a very welcome success for the Italian brand and an indication that there’s an untapped demand for value-for-money models in this segment as well. The Toyota C-HR gains another two spots to knock on the door of the top-40, but more importantly, it’s Toyota’s second best seller, outselling the Auris (#42) by 75 sales.

The Volvo XC60 (#51), in the final months of its life, continues to defy gravity and gains 59% as the new generation was not even on sale yet. However, for the first time in 3 months it does not lead its segment, as the Mercedes-Benz GLC (#49) beats it by almost 300 sales. The Audi Q2 remains the brand’s best selling crossover in 58th place, with the Q3 down by almost a quarter in 70th place. The new generation Nissan Micra is back up to 64th place, well ahead of the new generation Kia Rio in 79th place. The Ford Ka+ (#102) stays just outside the top-100 for the second consecutive month, while the Opel Karl/Vauxhall Viva (#95) remain ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Adam (#100) for the fourth time in five months.

Dacia not only sees the Sandero reach new highs, the Lodgy (#120) scores its highest volume in 3 years while the Dokker in 112th place is just 22 sales off its best-ever month, last December. Range_Rover_Velar-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeFor the third time this year the Jaguar F-Pace (#134) outsells its rival Porsche Macan (#138), while the super fresh Alfa Romeo Stelvio is closing in at #164.

We welcome three new models in the ranking this month: the Opel/Vauxhall Crossland X, the crossover that’s replacing the Meriva MPV, enters at #205. Its larger sibling Grandland X, which is built on the same platform as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 and the upcoming Citroën C5 Aircross, starts with 79 sales in 292nd place. And finally the first 55 units of the Range Rover Velar are registered, landing the model at #303.

  1. Wow, the Tipo is selling almost as much as the Peugeot 308 and Renault Mégane? Impressive.
And the Giulia sales numbers are also very interesting. Almost catching up to the Talisman.

      1. @tuga Those numbers are good for Fiat though. Around 50% of sales coming from outside Italy is around what they usually achieve, excluding the 500. The Panda makes around 80% of its sales exclusively in Italy though.

      2. @Pedro

True. And i see plenty of them around where i ( we? 🙂 ) live, even if many of them are rental cars.

I don’t dislike the Tipo, i see why people buy them ( big car for little money ), i just don’t see why it’s so surprising to people that this formula is working when it’s been working for years now with Dacia.

    1. “Wow, the Tipo is selling almost as much as the Peugeot 308 and Renault Mégane? Impressive.”

Not really, remember that the Tipo have the prices of a subcompact car.

      Starting price :

      -Tipo : 12 500 euros
      -Megane : 19 500 euros
      -308 : 20 500 euros

For me there is no comparison to have in terms of sales figure between the Tipo and the 308 / Megane with these huges differences in prices

In fact Fiat is almost a low cost brand that is only able to sell cars under 15,000 euros.

      1. Well, then Fiat really studied the market well because it seems offering smaller engines in a C-segment car and a lower price is paying off for them. No other manufacturer offers a small diesel engine.

And even if the price is lower, what matters are profit margins. If the profit margins for the Tipo are the same than for the 308 and Mégane then that just shows that Fiat nailed it.

As for them being almost a low cost brand, I agree, if you exclude the 500 subfamily. Because it’s easy to see plenty of 500’s that cost more than the Tipo moving around. And the 500X also has been a success and is more expensive than the Tipo. And the 124 is selling great.
I guess they’re not so much of a low cost brand then?
They don’t have reputation in the compact car segment, so they need to start from the bottom. If they follow Skoda’s strategy, the next generation of the Tipo will be much closer to the competition.

  2. Tipo is doing surprisingly well indeed which is nice for Fiat, because they always had trouble selling cars in the compact car segment or larger. Hopefully for them the numbers are not only depending on Italy.

Disappointing result for the new Civic. It has been on many different European markets for more than 6 months now so losing 15% YTD is bad. 1,5% up in May isn’t promising either fur such a brand new model.

Crossovers/SUVs have never been more important for all brands. Maserati is the best example: Levante outperforms the cheaper Ghibli.

    1. @Losange

The new Civic isn’t available with a diesel yet. Unsurprisingly, it affects sales. Mind you, i’m not sure sales are going to be that great even when the diesel arrives, because they’re ditching the Civic Tourer.

I’ve said it before: Honda does not care about Europe.

      1. @tuga

Yeah, but the Civic is a familiar name in one of the most popular segments in Europe. A new model should at least be getting positive numbers. Honda can only blame themselves for neglecting their customers throughout the years. They are still active in Europe so they do care somehow.

  3. Re FIATIPO:

Ranking is about May. In June the model achieved an equal volume.
Easily 150k in 2017, as predicted by … someone.
The 15k in EU is without 3500 units in Turkey where the TIPO ranks #2, behind the (great looking) Megane Sedan

  4. Quote CSB: “It still manages to outsell the Renault Megane, whose supply issues have been resolved but who doesn’t seem to deliver on its promise of challenging the Astra for the #2 spot of the segment. It probably doesn’t help that Renault launched the new Scenic not long after the Megane”.

In May Scenic and Megane scored 27.500 units.
In June the volume was up to 35.500.
In other words: Renault is catching up with these two.
