European car sales analysis March and Q1 2016 – models

Opel_Astra-2016-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeAfter the March and Q1 2016 European car sales analysis – brands, let’s zoom in on the model rankings. The entire top-8 loses market share which means the Volkswagen Golf consolidates its dominance with stable sales despite the arrival of new competitors Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Renault Megane, while its nearest rivals are losing ground in March. The Ford Fiesta and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa both lose more than 10% and the Renault Clio drops almost 5%, while the YTD #2 Volkswagen Polo is down to 5th place this month. The Nissan Qashqai traditionally enjoys healthy sales in March thanks to its popularity in the UK, which sets it in 6th place, ahead of the Ford Focus and Peugeot 208. Helped by the new generation, the Astra is the fastest growing model in the top-20 and claims another top-10 position, while the Fiat 500 does so too for only the fourth time in the past 2 years and in fact since its modern rebirth in 2007.

While the Renault Captur stabilizes after its impressive surge in the rankings, the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka is passed by the Peugeot 2008. The Captur’s larger sibling Renault Kadjar improves to 29th place ahead of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Kuga and the Hyundai Tucson which drops from 24th last month to #38 in March. However, the new generation Kia Sportage has moved ahead of them all into #24 and second of the segment behind the untouchable Qashqai.

BMW_X1-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe BMW 2-series Active Tourer in 42nd place is closing in on the Citroën C4 Picasso in 41st place for the leadership of the segment, as the new Volkswagen Touran (#49) is still gaining traction. Similarly, the BMW X1 threatens the Audi Q3 at #58 and #57 respectively. In the midsized sedan and station wagon segment, the Ford Mondeo (#60) just doesn’t seem able to really take off, as it drops back behind the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia (#48) again, while the Volkswagen Passat remains absolutely untouchable at #16. That leaves the Mondeo vulnerable to the Renault Talisman, which is still in start-up mode but up to #159 without having the station wagon version available yet, which is the best selling body style in this segment.

The Honda HR-V is up to #115 but appears to cannibalize the Jazz (#100), as that model’s fresh new generation is actually down on the already low figure of the outgoing model last year. Contrastingly, Mazda doesn’t seem to have the same problem, as both the CX-3 (#107) and the Mazda2 (#102) both show nice upward mobility.

Mazda_MX5-ND-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeA number of nameplates have scored record volume in March: Most notably the Fiat 500X (#40) which passes the 10.000 monthly sales mark for the first time and does so convincingly, while its sibling Jeep Renegade (#77) sells over 6.000 units for the first time. The BMW X1 (#58) is boosted by the new generation and immediately sets a new record at over 9.000 sales, and similarly the new generation Mazda MX-5 (#163) also sets a monthly record for at least since the second generation. The Nissan X-Trail (#65) sells more than 5.100 units for the first time. Of the recently launched models, the Opel Karl / Vauxhall Viva (#59) pass 6.000 sales for the first time, and the Jaguar XE (#118) and Land Rover Discovery Sport (#73) also hit volume records. The Ford Mustang (#177) has taken off since Ford officially launched the muscle car in Europe and we’ll keep an eye on its progress the next couple of months to see how high it can go.

We welcome a few new models to the ranking this month: of  which a € 200.000+ SUV is the highest ranking so far. The Bentley Bentayga sells 100 units in its first month on the market as the most expensive, most luxurious and most powerful SUV available. It is joined by another luxury SUV, the Maserati Levante at 33 (demo) sales. These two are in great contrast with the new Suzuki Baleno hatchback, which has arrived as well with a first batch of 42 demo sales.

Year to date, the Ford Fiesta has reclaimed the #2 spot as I predicted last month, thanks to nice volume in the UK in March. Similarly, the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa leapfrogs the Peugeot 208 on its strong presence in the UK. And its larger sibling Opel/Vauxhall Astra moves past the Skoda Octavia into the top-8 and second place of the compact segment behind traditional leader Golf. The Kia Sportage benefits from its excellent performance in March to pass the Volkswagen Tiguan for the first quarter.

  1. Hi Bart do you have an info about the largest market for the VW Golf.I think that the good sales of golf is because the largest golf’s market is in Germany. But compared to the others europeans market the increase of the german market is low.And that the german market is the largest one in Europe is the key factor to the massive golf(and the others german cars) increase or stabilisation of the sales in the last decades. But the larger increase in the other europeans markets like Uk Italy France and others will smash the sales of german cars in the future. In the Uk the main reason for the good sales for GM is the local manufacture of the Vauxhall brand.

    1. Hi Phil,

the largest market for the Golf is absolutely Germany, indeed. I don’t have exact figures, as the Germans publish sales figures of the Golf and Golf Sportsvan combined. But still, keep in mind the Golf is also #1 in a few smaller countries, like Norway, and a top player in most of the other countries. In the UK it’s #4, in Spain #5 (1st in its segment), in Netherlands #3 (1st in its segment), Italy top-8 and 1st in its segment by far, and even in France it is a top-15 player and currently #2 of the segment as the Megane is changing to the new generation. So sure Germany is important, but the Golf is this dominant because it’s successful all over Europe.

  2. Very interesting information, thanks.Do you think that the new formed(for Europe) small SUV/Crossover segment and his rising popularity can steal clients from the C segment?

    1. I think most buyers of the Captur, 2008 and Mokka are upgrading from a B-segment (subcompact), but they will surely also lure some customers down from the C-segment, yes.

    1. Yes, absolutely. Although I think the C-segment will stay the second largest in Europe for a long time. It’s certainly not doomed.

  3. Ok you are maybe right for the C segment(the things are bad for Renault clio but look the sales of 208 are not bad at all for example) but what do you think about the A segment i look the sales of the cars like twingo and the sales down strongly.

    1. The A-segment benefits from a strong recovery of the Italian market, the largest market for these cars. So for now they’ll be okay, especially the Fiat models, as long as that market continues to grow again. But there’s not a lot of new products coming out in the near future, just the Suzuki Ignis and maybe the Brazilian Ford Ka, which is expected to have A-segment pricing for a near B-segment size, if they decide to bring it to Europe, which I doubt. Full segment reports start tomorrow with the minicar segment.

  4. Great!Italian market is with great potential and the sales rising strongly.I think that Marchionne tactics to ignore italian and european market are wrong.Lancia and Alfa Romeo had the chanses to take a big part from the pie.Citroen also have the chanses but they badly need new models like Peugeot.
