After looking at the manufacturers and brands rankings for June 2021, let’s take a deeper look at car sales by model in Europe. If traditional leader Volkswagen Golf is back on top for the fourth consecutive month, it’s the nameplate in second place that surprises most: the Tesla Model 3 end the quarter with nearly 26,000 deliveries, its best month ever in Europe both in terms of overall sales and position. Four subcompact hatchbacks complete the top-6 of which Renault-Nissan takes the best two, with the Renault Clio in third place and the Dacia Sandero in fourth, followed by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa and Toyota Yaris. The Fiat 500 is down 4 places on last month but celebrates its fourth consecutive month in the top-10. Volkswagen has three nameplates in the top-10 with the T-Roc at #8 and the Tiguan at #9 as the two best selling crossovers, with the T-Cross at #16 as well. The latter even has a record month. The Renault Captur completes the top-10 as the the third-best crossover, just ahead of the Peugeot 2008. The Ford Puma is the best selling Ford model in Europe at #15, with the Kuga in 30th place, but the Fiesta (#40) and the Focus all the way down in 85th place.
Best selling luxury model behind the Tesla Model 3 is the Audi A3 (#23), just ahead of the Volvo XC40 at #24, the BMW 3-Series at #28 and the BMW 1-Series at #29. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class follows at a distance at #36. Other great performers in the top-100 are the MG ZS (#98, +132.5% to a new monthly record), Hyundai Tucson (#20, +85.6%) thanks to the new generation, Mercedes-Benz GLA (#64, +83.2%), helped by the EQA, and the BMW X3 (#39, +78% to a new monthly sales record). On the other hand, models struggling in the top-100 are the Ford Focus (#85, -68.8%) and Fiesta (#45, -42.2%) due to the chip shortages, as well as the Renault Clio (#3, -36.7%), Peugeot 308 (#84, -36.3%) due to the new generation arriving soon, and the Renault Twingo (#49, -31.8%).
Big movers among existing models are the Mazda CX-3 (#168, +21,400%), Polestar 2 (#163, +8,583.3%), Volkswagen ID.3 (#57, +5,700%), Mazda MX-30 (#188, +3,466.7%) and the Rolls Royce Ghost (#327, +800%). Other record breakers are the Volkswagen Arteon at #129, the Lexus UX at #134, the Jeep Wrangler at #176 helped by the plug-in hybrid version and the Ford Explorer at #230.
Newcomers
Best selling newcomers (<12 months) are the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, up 11 to #53,Citroën C4, down 3 on May to #56 and the Volkswagen ID.4, up 15 to #88, followed by its sibling Skoda Enyaq, down 4 to #82, Cupra Fomentor, down 11 to #83 and the Renault Arkana, up 36 places and entering the top-100 at #94. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is up 12 places to #123, with the Hyundai Bayon at #149, the Dacia Spring at #151 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is up 32 places to #195.
