At +15.3% in June 2021, the European car market makes its fourth consecutive month of double digit increases on the troublesome first half of 2020. However, at 1.29 million deliveries, June 2021 is still down 13% on June 2019, the best comparison with 2019 so far this year. The year-to-date figure now stands at 6.49 million deliveries, up 26.3% (but down 22.1% on the first half of 2019). Many European markets posted double- and triple-digit percentage gains in June. Looking at the major EU car markets, the United Kingdom posted the biggest gain with a 28% increase, followed by Germany (+24.5%), Spain (+17.1%) and Italy (+12.6%). However in France passenger car sales were down (-14.7%) in June. Other markets in the red were Slovenia (-21.1%), Belgium (-16.3%), Luxembourg (-3.8%) and Austria (-2.3%).
Car models (hatchback, sedan, stationwagon, coupe and convertible) lose market share again at +11.3% but improve from their lowest shares ever in the last two months to 52%. Crossovers and SUVs outperform at +24.7% to their fourth-best ever market share at 43.5% share. MPV sales are down again at -11.4% to 4.6% share. Within these figures, EV and PHEV sales jumped 157% year-on-year to over 237,000 deliveries for a 19% market share (10% full electrics/BEVs).
June 2021 Manufacturers
Volkswagen Group continues to outperform the market at +25.6% although its market share is slightly down from its record in May to 26.6%. Stellantis almost follows the market at +14% but Renault-Nissan is down 12.6% as the worst performing manufacturer in the top-7. Hyundai-Kia on the other hand is the best performing manufacturer in the top-9 at +48.9% on last year. This is the first time that the South-Korean manufacturer sells more than 100,000 cars in Europe in a non-March month. BMW AG is up 19.2% while Daimler AG is down 7.6%. Toyota Motor Corp. is up 30.2% and jumps ahead of Daimler and Ford Motor Company. The latter is the worst performing manufacturer in Europe at -15.9% and drops to #8 at just 4.4% market share. Tesla Motors is the best performing manufacturer, more than tripling its sales of last year with its second-best ever month in Europe after December 2020. Tata Motors is down 1% and drops behind Mazda. SAIC more than doubles up on last year to its highest ever monthly sales in Europe.

June 2021 Brands
In the brands ranking, Volkswagen gains share again while Renault is back into second place ahead of Peugeot, even though the former is down 19.9% as the worst performing brand in the top-25 and the latter is up just 1.5%. Toyota maintains its fourth place and is the best performing brand in the top-10 at +31.2%. From third place in May, Audi is down to #6 back behind BMW, although the former outperforms the latter when compared to last year. Skoda loses market share at +7.1%, but Mercedes-Benz and Ford are even down on last year. Opel/Vauxhall is up almost 30% in 10th place and the best performing mainstream brand of Stellantis. Fiat follows closesly with sales up 20% to keep Hyundai behind, despite a gain of 55.5% for the Korean brand. Kia isn’t far behind at #13 with sales up 42.5% ahead of Citroën. Seat (including Cupra) is closing in on the French brand thanks to sales up 49.2%. Dacia and Volvo lose market share, while Tesla is up to #18, outselling Nissan and Suzuki.
Mazda and Jeep gain market share, and even Honda is back up again, outselling Mitsubishi. DS is ahead of Lexus and Jaguar outsells Lancia again. MG and Smart more than double up on last year and so do DR Motor and Lotus further down. Lynk & Co lands at #41 as the third-best Chinese brand behind MG and Polestar but well ahead of Aiways, Xpeng, Maxus and Seres.
