European car sales analysis June 2016 – models

Volvo_S90-V90-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeAfter discussing the June 2016 European car brand sales ranking, we’ll look at which models sold well in June. And the first honorable mention goes to the Renault Clio, up an impressive 16,7% in the final stage before its mid-cycle facelift to climb to the #2 spot behind the perennial leader Volkswagen Golf, which is down 6,6% but remains unthreatened so far. In May we already saw sales of the Ford Fiesta start to fall and that continues in June with a 13,8% loss, but at least it’s back above the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, for now. The big winner in the top-10 is the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, up 25,9% and into 6th place, its highest ranking since 2012. Its rival, the new generation Renault Megane improves even more at +35,5% in 13th place. The success of these two newcomers in the compact car segment is hurting the Ford Focus, down 14,8% and out of the top-10.

Renault-Talisman-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe new generation Audi A4 is up to #19, ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Renault Kadjar (#24) finally manages to outsell its Korean rivals Hyundai Tucson (#34) and Kia Sportage (#33), as does the new generation Volkswagen Tiguan in 31st place. The Skoda Superb more than doubles its sales of last year and is now in the top-50, ahead of the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia (#66) and the Ford Mondeo (#67), while the Renault Talisman improves further with 3.902 sales in 117th place. The Mercedes-Benz GLC (#75) does something its predecessor has never even come close to: grab second place of its segment and outsell the Audi Q5.

Fiat_Tipo-hatchback-station_wagonWith the hatchback and station wagon versions just entering the showrooms, the Fiat Tipo breaks through the 5.000 units barrier in 93rd place. In the beginning of this year, we’ve polled our readers about the chances of success for the Tipo, and the vast majority expected the model to sell over 75.000 annual units, a figure it’s well under way to achieve without full availability of the two versions that are expected to become more popular than the sedan.

Ford_S_Max-2016-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeSo Renault’s volume models are doing exceptionally well, while Ford’s are losing ground, but things look different in the large MPV segment, where the Ford S-Max (#115) is taking control, while the Renault Espace can’t seem to gain traction, now in 133rd place behind the much older Seat Alhambra (#126) and Volkswagen Sharan (#127). The new generation Toyota Prius hybrid is up to #172 and ahead of the Nissan Leaf EV (#183), of which deliveries of the updated version with an increased range have only just started.

Among recent launches, the Suzuki Baleno enters the top-150 and the Jaguar F-Pace is now the brand’s most popular model in 156th place, one spot ahead of the Jaguar XE, but more importantly for the brand: ahead of the Porsche Macan in 165th place. The Infiniti Q30 enters the top-180 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia is up to #187.

New models

Fiat_124_Spider-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeIf the pace of new model launches in China slows down in June, that’s certainly not the case in Europe, where we can welcome no less than 7 all-new nameplates to the ranking. The highest all-new model this month is the Fiat 124 Spider at #211 with 779 sales, which is half of the figure of the Mazda MX-5, the car on which this roadster is based, so it will be interesting to see if the Italian version can outsell its Japanese counterpart. Next up are the Volvo S90 and V90 in 250th place with 204 sales. These are the long-awaited successors to the S80 sedan and V70 station wagon, although the latter still sells exceptionally well. Built on the new platform and available with 4-cylinder engines, the S90/V90 should help Volvo come closer than ever to its German rivals in the premium large car segment.

MG_GS-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe highest ranking newly launched SUV this month is the MG GS at #285 with 65 sales, already the Chinese-British brand’s #2 model ahead of the MG6. The GS has already been available in China since early 2015 and is now ready to conquer the UK. And if it weren’t for the Brexit-uncertainty, SAIC-MG had planned to use the GS as the model with which it would start sales in other European markets as well, but those plans have been shelved for now. A few places further down the ranking, in 288th place, we welcome the Kia Niro, a new hybrid crossover from the Korean brand that’s built on the platform of the Hyundai Ioniq (also new at #304 with 28 sales). Whereas the Ioniq will be available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full-electric powertrains, the Niro will remain a hybrid only. The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe will soon challenge the BMW X4, but starts in 318th place with a modest 13 registrations and the final all-new model to hit the European car sales ranking in June is the Ford Ka+ with one single unit. Ford sees not enough profitability in the minicar segment and replaces the Fiat-built Ka with a subcompact no-frills model that’s made in Brazil and was developed for upcoming markets, just like the EcoSport small crossover. I’m not sure if this strategy will be successful, and we’ll keep an eye on its progress in the coming months.
