European car sales analysis December 2017 – models

Renault_Clio-Captur-sales-figures-EuropeAfter looking at the December 2017 car brand sales in Europe, let’s take a closer look at individual model sales figures. A historic moment in the top-3: behind traditional leader Volkswagen Golf, Renault manages to set 2 models onto the European monthly podium for the very first time ever with the Clio in its usual #2 spot and the Captur in a best-ever 3rd place. This is only the second time this year, after June, that the Captur is the best selling crossover in Europe, ahead of the Volkswagen Tiguan in 5th place and the Nissan Qashqai at #7. The Dacia Duster in 9th place also writes history by making it 4 crossovers in the European top-10 ranking for the first time ever. The Duster had never appeared in the European top-15 before, but is boosted by sell-out pricing on the outgoing generation before the second generation Duster arrives in 2018. The Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo are both down by almost a quarter as deliveries of their new generations are still gaining traction. As a result, the Peugeot 208 is ahead of them for the third consecutive month (except for the Fiesta in November), and in 4th place for the second month running after scoring best-ever 3rd places in October. The Dacia Sandero falls just short of making it 2 Dacia models in the top-10 but at least outscores its fresher rivals Toyota Yaris (#16) and Citroën C3 (#17). The Ford Focus (#12) remains surprisingly stable for a model that’s due to be replaced within a year. The BMW 1-series scores an impressive 14th place, the highest position since its #11 spot in September 2013 and for the second consecutive month ahead of its rival Audi A3, but also ahead of mainstream rivals Renault Megane (#15) and Opel/Vauxhall Astra (#21). Behind the Peugeot 3008, back down to 18th place, the Ford Kuga is back up to #22 and the Hyundai Tucson back up to #23, its highest position of the year.

The Opel/Vauxhall Corsa drops another 12 places to #25, the lowest ranking ever for the nameplate in Europe. The BMW X1 hits a new ranking record at #26, improving on the 27th place scored last January. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class in 28th place is threatened by its rivals BMW 3-series (#29) and Audi A4 (#31), the Fiat 500 is down to its lowest position since its launch in 33rd place, just behind its sibling Fiat Panda. The Opel/Vauxhall Mokka is down to #34, the lowest ranking since 2014, before its facelift. The Renault Scenic is the best selling MPV in Europe for the second month running in 40th place, but the new generation Seat Ibiza (#41) is unable to make a mark so far. The Peugeot 5008 in 57th place beats its rival Skoda Kodiaq (#78) for the third straight month.

Volvo_XC40-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeBest selling newcomer (<12 months) behind the Opel/Vauxhall Crossland X (#74) and its sibling Citroën C3 Aircross (#82) is the Kia Stonic (#111) followed by the Hyundai Kona, moving up 29 spots on November to #120. The Volkswagen T-Roc  jumps 44 spots to #22 and its sibling Seat Arona is up 14 places to #126. The Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X at is down 19 spots to #149 and the Skoda Karoq is down 11 places to #158, both passed by the Renault Koleos, up 23 spots to #136. After peaking at #131 in November, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is down to #169, just ahead of the Volkswagen Arteon (#171) and Range Rover Velar (#174). Last month’s arrivals Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (#236), Jaguar E-Pace (#240), BMW X2 (#324) and Alpine A110 (#343) obviously haven’t started customer deliveries yet but should start storming up the charts soon. This month we welcome just one new nameplate: the Volvo XC40 crossover at #281.

  1. Hi Bart,

is it 376 or 454 for the Jaguar E-Pace? The numbers seem to differ between the list and the model page.

    Best,
    Daniel

  2. I’ll be intrigued to see if the Astra remains in 4th in its segment as for 2 or 3 months in a row the Megane has outsoles it, even though its sales haven’t been amazing either. Vauxhall Opel sales are dragging on, and for 2018 it could get worse, I hope it’s new SUVs can balance the huge drops from the ageing Corsa, and harshly attacked Astra. From Fiesta’s sales in january it seems to be aging sales again, and i expect it to be 2nd this year, followed by the polo, and Tiguan(Clio and 208 will likely to have bad sales due to new models coming)

  3. I hope the Corsa drop symbolises people not accepting brands to be lazy by exploiting existing models. Don’t call it a new car then.

  4. Nice to see Insignia selling well and also nice to see rise in sales of Zoe, it has sold almost as much as Talisman and Espace combined! It really is people’s electric car. Punto is dead, not unexpected though. Rio and Ibiza are in bad shape, Rio especially. Expected more from Arteon but maybe the sales will rise a bit but it is not looking so great. Giulia is down. For this year I have high hopes for XC60, provided prices come a bit more down to earth and possibly also new V60.
