European car sales analysis 2018 – models

European-car-sales-analysis-November-2018

After looking at 2018 European car sales by manufacturer and brand, let’s take a deeper look into how individual models sold last year. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Volkswagen Golf is still the dominant leader in Europe, for the 11th consecutive year. However, the Golf was the biggest loser in the top-18 with a loss of 7,6%, which translates to roughly 37.000 fewer sales.

Citroen_C3-2017-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeStill, the #2 Renault Clio is more than 116.000 sales behind, followed by the Volkswagen Polo, the biggest winner in the top-10 with a gain of 8,9%. The Ford Fiesta makes it three subcompact cars in a top-4 which is exactly the same as last year. The Volkswagen Tiguan takes over from the Nissan Qashqai as Europe’s best selling crossover in 5th place as the latter ends its four-year streak of year-over-year gains. The Opel/Vauxhall Corsa is down to the bottom end of the top-10 with the Toyota Yaris and Dacia Sandero not far behind. Both the Yaris and the Sandero jump 4 places, allowing the former to enter the top-10 with the latter on its tail. The Renault Captur (#12, -0,1%) sees stable sales despite being due for replacement and the continued arrival of new models to the small crossover segment. The Citroën C3 (#13, +1,8%) tops the 200.000 sales mark for the second consecutive year, while the Peugeot 3008 (#14, +20,2%) is above that figure for the first time ever. In contrast, the Ford Focus (#15, -6,2%) drops below 200.000 sales for the first time since the launch of its first generation back in 1998.

Mercedes_Benz_A_Class-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Fiat 500 (#16, -0,5%) remains surprisingly stable despite its age, while its sibling Fiat Panda (#19) is down 10%. The Dacia Duster (#17, +23,8%) is the big winner in the top-25, outselling the Peugeot 2008 (#18, -1,1%), while the Opel/Vauxhall Astra (#21, -26,7%) is the big loser in the top-30. The Volkswagen Passat (#22, -15,9%) is down for the third consecutive year but remains the best selling midsized car in Europe. The new generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class (#23, +7,2%) is the best selling model from a luxury brand and even outsells many non-luxury compact models like the Peugeot 308 (#24, -2,4%), Seat Leon (#29, -3,8%)) and Renault Megane (#30, -17,7%). The Volkswagen T-Roc lands at #28 for its first full year of sales, ahead of the Toyota C-HR at #33. The Opel/Vauxhall Mokka X (#37, -29%)) is starting to show its age and struggles with internal rivalry from the Citroën C3 Aircross (#43) and Opel/Vauxhall Crossland X (#50). The Mercedes-Benz GLC (#35, +12,5%) outsells the E-Class (#38, -7,6%) but the latter remains ahead of the BMW 5-series (#44, -1,2%).

Volvo_XC40-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe Audi A4 (#39, -23%) is hit hard by the non-availability of some of its most popular versions due to the new WLTP testing regulations that came into effect in September. Still, the A4 stays ahead of its rival BMW 3-series (#45, -17,1%) which was just replaced by a new generation. Best selling MPV is the Renault Scenic again at #54, despite sales down 14,8% as the segment continues to decline. The Jeep Compass (#69) outsells its smaller sibling Renegade (#72, -0,2%). The Nissan Leaf (#124, +130,2%) passes the Renault Zoe (#127, +25,4%) to become Europe’s best selling electric car as both models set annual sales records.

Best selling newcomer is the Volvo XC40 at #114, followed by the BMW X2 at #128 and the Jaguar E-Pace at #148. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross at #150 and DS7 Crossback complete the top-5 of best selling new models, although all five already had a handful of sales in 2017 as well. That makes the Audi Q8 at #233 the best selling true newcomer in 2018, followed by the Peugeot Rifter at #239 and the Jaguar I-Pace at #244.

  1. “The Tiguan took over the crown form the Nissan QQ to become EU’s best selling SUV” .

The Tiguan numbers INCLUDE the ALLSPACE.

Add the 3008 & 5008 numbers and we have EU’s #4, above the Tiguan.

      1. PSA is actually well positioned in the SUV/Crossover battle, if you look at all the Models from Peugeot, Citroen and Opel.
But yeah, VW is fighting back now with the T-Roc, Seat Arona, Skoda Karoq

    1. At least someone is able to think a bit longer and dissect VW’s mostly artificial dominance achieved by corruption.

      1. Scenic-Grand Scenic and C4 Picasso-C4 Grand Picasso? 500L and 500L Living? Non of them is listed separately.

    1. Well the Espace is above the Galaxy and the Talisman (as well as the Espace) has only small 1.6 diesel engines and it’s not present in the RHD markets UK/Ireland and in some Eastern european countries, take into account all these issues i think they have decent numbers.

  2. @xx_yy_zz, nobody is saying that’s wrong, but stating the Tiguan is “EU’s best selling SUV” like CSB does is misleading, because adding the numbers of the 3008 and 5008 would mean Peugeot outperforms VW in this respect as RickM already suggested. These cars compete with the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace respectively.

(@CSB, sometimes the reply button disappears and I’m not able to respond directly)

    1. You just said it’s wrong, that it’s “artificial dominance achieved by corruption”.
If “artificial dominance achieved by corruption” isn’t wrong, then what is it?

Peugeot decided to use completely different names instead of calling those cars two different versions of the same model, So as we don’t count Jetta’s sales into Golf’s numbers (that could make it world’s best selling model of all times), despite those are like hatchback and sedan versions of other compacts sold under the same name (like the Civic hatchback and sedan), why should it be different in Peugeot’s case?

      1. I said RickM is able to dissect VW’s mostly artificial dominance achieved by corruption. Of course the latter part is wrong. Presenting the Tiguan numbers like CSB does is misleading at most considering other competitors. It would be a good thing CSB saying something about the performance of Peugeot in this respect in the first place, but they’re not the only ones who automatically describe VW figures in the most positive way without looking any further.
        .
Your Golf-Jetta example is misleading as well, because for a while now the Jetta is a generation behind the Golf. Ergo: different car.
        .
Peugeot 3008 and 5008 sales should be added just like the VW Tiguan/Tiguan Allpace and Volvo S90/V90. The French should not be ‘discriminated’ for changing one single digit within a name of two related cars.

    2. When a new genearation of a model is being introduced in the middle of the year, or some body style lags behind the main version (an example from the Golf again: G3, G4, G5, G6 wagons were still in production for some months or years after they stoped making the hatchback), or the older generation becomes the “classic” (for example the Astra Classic, that existed for the F, G, H generations), they are mostly still a single entry in these charts. So I don’t think the difference of present generations matters that much.

Despite all that, I think you are still at least partially right. Maybe the 3008 and 5008 could have a combined number beside the separated ones, just like the a4/a5 and BMW 3/4 series, if it’s not too much of work.

  3. Impressive numbers by the Yaris and Sandero, their lattest facelifts brought new life into them and they seem to be enjoying an Indian Summer.

Fiat 500 and Panda also holding on, but Fiat as a brand seems to be slowly dying…

Very good numbers for VW and PSA SUVs, unlike the Renault Kadjar and Koleos.

In fact, some models seem to be going into oblivion mode like the Astra, Megane and Focus. People are definetivelly abandoning these once popular models for suv and premium competition.
