Volvo China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights

In 2010, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a leading Chinese automaker, acquired Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company. This acquisition marked one of the most significant purchases of a foreign carmaker by a Chinese company. Under Geely’s ownership, Volvo received substantial investments, leading to the development of new models and technologies.

After the acquisition, Volvo expanded its manufacturing presence in China. The company established plants in cities like Chengdu, Daqing, and Zhangjiakou. Volvo also set up an R&D center in Shanghai, emphasizing the importance of the Chinese market and tailoring its vehicles to meet local preferences and requirements.

Volvo’s product lineup in China is quite extensive, covering various segments from sedans like the S60 and S90 to SUVs such as the XC40, XC60, and XC90. The brand has adapted certain models specifically for the Chinese market, including offering long-wheelbase versions of some sedans, catering to local preferences for increased rear-seat legroom. Consistent with global trends and the Chinese government’s push for greener transportation, Volvo has been aggressive in its plans for electrification in China. The company announced that it aims to have fully electric cars make up half of its sales in China by 2025.

Volvo has seen significant growth in the Chinese market, thanks in part to Geely’s local expertise and the resources provided post-acquisition. The brand’s emphasis on safety, quality, and Scandinavian design has resonated with the growing Chinese middle class and luxury car buyers.
