Car sales in China keep skyrocketing, with a 29,5% growth rate in September, the highest rate of growth since 2013. With 2,22 million sales of domestically produced passenger cars, this reflects an additional half a million vehicles compared to September of 2015 and the second-best ever month in absolute numbers, after December 2015. One of the reasons for this accelerated growth rate is the government tax cut on vehicles with engines of 1.6 liters and lower, which is expected to be axed at the end of this year. So expect Q4 sales to be artificially boosted before a hard landing in the first quarter of 2017. To prevent this scenario, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers CAAM is lobbying the Chinese government to extend the tax cut into 2017, but has been unsuccessful so far. The Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Selling Rate hit a new record in September at 25,16 million units. The year-to-date figure for the first nine months of 2016 stands at 16,2 million, just shy of the full-year figure of 2013. Sales of crossovers and SUVs shot up 52% to 879.000 units, while deliveries of MPVs surged 37% to 221.500 and sedan sales increased 17% to 1,12 million. The share of local brands is back up to 41,9%, the third highest ever, behind last January and February. That pulls the year-to-date ratio of domestic brands above 40% again.
This booming market naturally leads to a number of records being broken for individual models, in fact there are so many that we won’t be able to mention them all in this article, but we’ll point out the most significant for you. For example, September is the first time ever that we have two models above 50.000 units: the Wuling Hongguang and the Haval H6. It’s also the first time that there’s no sedan model in the top-3, with the Baojun 730 MPV ahead of the Volkswagen Lavida (excluding the Gran Lavida hatchback). Crossovers are the hottest thing in China at the moment, and it shows in the models ranking: The GAC Trumpchi GS4 in 8th place is the #2 SUV and breaks its previous record by almost 4.000 sales, the Hyundai Tucson (#24) breaks through the 20.000 units for the first time, and the Nissan Qashqai (#34) does the same with the 15.000 sales barrier. The Geely Boyue (#42) grows above 14.000 monthly sales and its sibling Vision X6 (#69) hits 10.000 in only its second month on the market to beat the record of its predecessor Geely GX7 by 33%. The Roewe RX5 (#44) sells over 13.700 units in its third month of sales while the FAW Xenia R7 enters the top-100 at #97 and almost hits 8.000 to keep FAW afloat. Similarly, Lifan’s survival depends on the success of the Maiwei crossover (#120), now at more than 75% of total brand sales.
European brands
Volkswagen, by far the biggest brand in China, loses a slight bit of market share with a 28,8% growth rate as most of its sedans gain ground, but the Tiguan is stable as customers are awaiting the new generation. Deliveries of the Phideon large sedan have finally started, with 685 units this month. Audi sales of locally produced models are down for the first time this year at -7% as the A4L takes a huge hit due to the changeover to the new model. That allows BMW and Mercedes-Benz to catch up with increases of 19% and 23% respectively. BMW sales are boosted by the new X1 and Mercedes benefits from the new generation E-Class L. Volvo also grows at 19%, while Skoda adds another 36% to its sales. Renault breaks a new record with over 3.000 sales of the locally produced Kadjar, and Land Rover sells over 5.000 units for the first time since last May. We also welcome the start of local production for Jaguar, with almost 1.300 sales of the new XFL.
Contrastingly, the PSA brands continue to lose volume, with Citroën down more than 20% as its market share has dropped below 1% for the third consecutive month. Instead of launching affordable crossovers, the brand introduced the C6 large sedan this month, and with 544 sales it immediately outsold the smaller but ancient C5. Not bad for a first month, but not the brand’s saviour either. Sister brand Peugeot takes a 16% hit as it desparately needs the new 3008 and 5008 to whoo customers, and DS is down 23% as the DS4S hatchback breaks its volume record at a staggering 276 sales.
American brands
General Motors has been on a hot streak with Buick and Cadillac, but the former loses market share for only the second time this year at +13%. The Envision hits a new volume record at almost 26.500 sales and so does the Excelle XT/GT duo at over 36.000 sales. However, the venerable Excelle (the rebadged Daewoo Nubira) appears to finally reach the end of its life. Cadillac keeps shattering its records, going from 8.800 last month to 11.600 in September, boosted by the XT5 crossover and ATS-L sedan. In contrast, Chevrolet loses another 10% of its volume, but more importantly losing a whole percentage point of market share: from 3,3% in September 2015 to 2,3% this month. Even the successful launch of a new affordable sedan can’t reverse its fortune, as the 9.700 sales of the Cavalier in its first month are offset by a 8.900 unit drop for the Cruze. Before the arrival of the Cavalier, the Cruze had gained volume for the past 3 months thanks to the new generation, but apparently the newcomer cannibalizes sales of the old generation Cruze on which it is based.
Ford confirms it is back in shape with its third and largest month of growth at +49%, although the brand still loses market share year-to-date with sales up 10,5%. With the exception of the EcoSport which suffers from increased competition from cheap Chinese crossovers, all of Ford’s models improve in September, most notably the Edge large SUV and the Escort sedan. Jeep also breaks its sales record at over 13.000 sales for its two models.
Japanese brands
Honda continues its hot streak with yet another month of market share gains with a gain of almost 31%. In fact Honda was the #2 brand for locally produced models in China this month. The Civic, Fit and Accord carried most of the weight this month, while Honda’s crossovers show few signs of slowing down either. Nissan does one better at +34% thanks to the new generation Qashqai crossover and new Lannia sedan. After growing 40% in August, Toyota slows down with a small 6% increase in September. Mazda proves that its 53% increase last month was not a freak event with another 48% improvement this month. Not only the new CX-4 crossover has boosted sales at the brand, but also the Mazda3 Axela. Mitsubishi gains 43% as local production of the Outlander has started, but remains down 33% year-to-date while Suzuki clocks its 19th loss in 20 months at -10%. Infiniti shows a surprise loss of 7% as most other luxury brands are growing fast.
South-Korean brands
The South-Koreans both gain volume but lose market share, with Hyundai up 15% thanks to the Tucson and the two newest generations of the Elantra: the Langdon and Lingdong, while the Verna and Sonata lose volume. Sister brand Kia grows 26% solely on increases of the K3 sedan and the new KX5 crossover.
Chinese brands
Like last month, China’s largest domestic automakers outgrow the market by a large margin: +50% for Changan, +68% for both Haval, Geely and Chery, +46% for Baojun, +52% for BAIC and +70% for Dongfeng. Another thing they all have in common (except for Baojun, whose growth is fueled by the 730 MPV) is that they’ve successfully launched affordable crossovers in recent months, to which most of their gains can be credited. Besides the two crossover mentioned in the second paragraph of this article, Geely has also been refreshing its car line-up, with the Emgrand GS hatchback improving to 8.500 sales in its 5th month of sales, now joined by the Emgrand GL sedan, arguably one of the best looking domestic sedans.
Of the smaller brands, Zotye doubles its volume to over 30.000 sales for only the third time in the past 12 months (and forever) thanks to its crossovers Damai X5 and SR7. The Roewe RX5 helps SAIC Roewe triple its volume and add another 6.500 units on last month, when it broke through the 20.000 sales for the first time ever.
