Sales of automobiles in China increased 13,3% in May, the fastest growth rate so far in 2016. That means just over 1,7 million new passenger cars were registered in the country, for a Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Selling Rate of 22,1 million in May. Year to date, the figure stands at 8,8 million sales, an increase of 9,7% over the same period last year. Local brands continue to lag the overall market after enjoying a short boom in share in the beginning of 2016. In May, their share was down to 37,5%, the lowest of the year so far, but still up from 35,2% in May 2015. Sales of SUVs and crossovers jumped 36% to 627.000 units, MPVs followed with a 28% increase to 182.000 sales and even sedans sales were back into positive territory, albeit slightly at 1,5% to 904.000. Sales of EVs and PHEVs continued to thrive, with electric cars up 162% to 26.000 sales and Plug-in Hybrids gained 68% to 9.000 units.
As all models in the top-10 improve and 11 of the 12 best selling models add 25% or more to their volume of last year, the Chinese car market proves very dynamic again. The Wuling Hongguang reclaims its leadership after being outsold by the Haval H6 last month, while the quick rise out of nowhere of the Baojun 560 appears to have stalled. After its introduction last July, it has sold more than 30.000 units a month between October and March, including two 40.000+ months, but it dropped to 25.000 in April and is down to 18.500 in May, while falling out of the top-10. It’s still the best selling newcomer, ahead of the Buick Verano.
European brands
Breaking news: Jaguar Land Rover has finally started to report sales of its locally produced models in China: the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The former has been sold since October 2014 and the latter since a year later. We don’t yet have data from before this month, but May data shows that the Discovery Sport is the most popular of the two at 3.800 vs. 1.600 sales, undoubtedly helped by its optional 7-seater capability. With local production of the Jaguar XFL starting in a few months, we’ll finally be able to gain an insight into the performance of the Indian-owned British brands in China.
Audi continues its steady growth rate at +11,7% to 46.644 locally produced models, but BMW and especially Mercedes-Benz keep closing in, at +15,5% to 25.400 and +58,8% to 25.970 locally produced models respectively. BMW is boosted by the new generation X1, which is stretched exclusively for China to a size not much smaller than the import-only X3. Mercedes-Benz enjoys strong volumes of the C-Class L and GLA, while the E-Class L is down as it will switch to the new generation soon. Volvo recovers from a its three-month slump but is still down 2% year-to-date. It should finish the year in positive territory, helped by the introduction of the new S90. Volkswagen is steady again with sales up 10,2% as the Jetta enjoys strong growth, while Skoda is up an impressive 21,2% thanks to the Superb and Yeti.
May is another forgettable month for PSA, with both Peugeot and Citroën losing about 22% of their volumes as they’re too dependent on sedans and hatchbacks while missing out on the crossover boom. DS fares even worse with sales down almost 46% to under 1.200 units. That includes just 24 sales of the brand new DS 4S hatchback. That’s what poor product planning does for you. They could take a lesson from Renault’s playbook, which is trying to conquer China with crossovers only. In its third month, 1.870 units of the Kadjar were sold, which isn’t bad at all but should pick up some more to call the model a blockbuster success.
American brands
Just look at sales volumes of the Jeep Cherokee, another brand that just started local production after years of import-only sales. The Cherokee appears to have found its stride at around 9.000 monthly sales and the upcoming Renegade will undoubtedly beat that figure when its launches later this year.
Ford confirms that its loss in April wasn’t a one-time slip, as the brand loses 16,4% again in May as strong sales of the Edge, now the brand’s best selling crossover, can’t offset collapsing volumes of the EcoSport, Kuga and Mondeo. The brand is still up year-to-date, as opposed to Chevrolet which has now lost volume for 14 consecutive months and the end is not in sight. The only positive news about the brand’s sales is that the new Malibu has stabilized, but all other models keep losing volume. The Chevrolet Sail is down by half as the changeover to the new generation is happening all but flawless. At least General Motors has some good news from Buick and Cadillac, with the former up 35% on the success of the Verano and Excelle XT/GT sedans, and the latter more than doubling with the XT5 SUV already the brand’s best selling model in its second month of sales.
Japanese brands
If you’ve been following China sales figures on this site for a while, you’ll be able to predict the following paragraph, as the trend we’ve been seeing for the past couple of months continues: the Big-3 grow while the smaller players suffer. Thanks to its crossovers, Honda leads the way again although its growth rate has slowed to 14,3%. Nissan is close behind with sales up 12,9% on strong Qashqai and X-Trail volume, plus the addition of the Lannia sedan. The Murano stays far behind the Ford Edge, though. Toyota is up just 5,7% after an impressive first quarter, and just the Corolla shows impressive growth at +27,7% as all of its other models are pretty stable. Infiniti sales are stable again after a one-time drop last month.
Mazda has been in an on-again, off-again cadence since last July, alternating a month of growth with a month of declines. After losing more than 20% of its volume in April, the brand is back up 6,6% in May. Year-to-date, Mazda is virtually stable with sales down just 0,3%. The same can’t be said of Suzuki, which is down for the 16th straight month at -16,4% for a year-to-date loss of 18,2%, despite the successful introduction of the Vitara, now its best selling model. Matters are even worse for Mitsubishi, down for the 15th month in a row, but losing 43,3% for the month and 54,7% so far this year. The ASX is the only model above 600 sales and appears to be slightly rebounding after sales collapsed in the beginning of the year, but the brand is just too dependent on a single model and too small to survive on a market share of just 0,15%.
South-Korean brands
Hyundai and Kia are recovering from a slump in the first few months of 2016, as the former is up 25,4% for the month and the latter clocks its first sales increase of the year. However, not all is well yet as Hyundai’s sudden surge is partially attributed to big discounts, especially on the Tucson crossover. The brand also benefitted from a sudden spike in demand for the Elantra Yuedong, which is the already 10-year old version from two generations ago. Year-to-date, Hyundai sales in China are still down 5,5%. Kia is down 9,4% year-to-date, as its sales increased for the first time this year, albeit by a meager 2,3%. Here too the crossovers made the biggest difference.
Chinese brands
As mentioned above, the big champion of recent months Baojun is losing steam, with sales up just 13,8% in May, and 87% year-to-date. On the other hand, GAC Trumpchi keeps going strong thanks to the GS4 crossover: the brand almost triples for the month and year-to-date. BAIC is up over 40% as it continues its product onslaught: Beijing Automotive has launched no less than 8 new models in as many months. And that excludes its sub-brand Changhe which sees its sales increase eightfold on a single new model, the Q25 crossover. Similarly, Zotye also benefits from launching 5 new models in 7 months, its sales are up 40,8% for the month and 52,3% for the year. Chery is back into positive after three months of declines, helped by the successful launch of the Arrizo 5, now the brand’s second best selling vehicle behind the Tiggo 3. Geely enjoys its fastest growth so far this year, boosted by the new Boyue SUV and Emgrand GS hatchback while its FC Vision and Emgrand EC7 sedans remain popular. Great Wall has all but pulled out of the sedan business with just one model remaining as it focuses entirely on the Haval SUV brand, which grows 20% again, although helped by price cuts of its most popular model.
MG sales are down for the first time in more than a year, as the GS crossover has passed its first anniversary and the brand hasn’t launched any new models since. Sister brand Roewe more than doubles its volume thanks to the relatively fresh 360 sedan and 550 hybrid, which now takes almost 99% of 550 volume. Wuling ends a four-month losing streak with a 24% improvement, although it’s still down 10,8% for the year.
Meanwhile, FAW suffers a 16th consecutive month of declines at -37,2% as even the newly launched Xenia R7 can’t stop the bleeding. After 12 months of heavy declines (as much as -82% in January), the end of the crisis is not in sight for Lifan, but at least the Maiwei 7-seater SUV which was launched last month helps soften the blow, as sales are down “just” 46,3% in May, the best performance so far this year, as year-to-date figures are still down almost 70%.
New models
This month, 7 all-new models were in launched China, plus 3 new electrified versions of existing models. We’ll discuss them in a separate post for New model introductions in China.
