China car sales analysis January 2020

Passenger car sales in China are down for the 19th consecutive month in January 2020, and at -20.1% to 1.61 million, they are down by the largest percentage of that streak. Main cause of the decline is the Lunar New Year holidays which fell in January this year instead of in February as they were last year. The spreak of the Corona virus has not affected January car sales much yet, but February is going to be the worst month in a few decades, with factories and dealerships closed and a 92% plunge in sales in the first two weeks of February, with full-month declines of 70% projected. This only adds to the already dim outlook for the Chinese car market this year, but analysts already expect the virus to have a negative impact on an already weak car market in 2020 and the production of more than 1 million vehicles will be impacted by the corona virus epidemic as the market is now expected to decline another 5% in 2020. Back to January, when crossovers and SUVs gained ground again, with a 12.9% decline to grab 46.7% of the Chinese passenger car market, a new record and beating the previous record of October 2019 (45.3%) by 1.4 percentage points. Sedan sales were down 23.9% to 48.2% share, which is surprisingly enough not a new low, as their share was below 48% in October 2019. MPV sales are once again taking the biggest hit, down 42.1% in January for a 5.1% share, a new record low beating the previous low of 5.5% share hit in April and June 2019. Within those figures, sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids plummeted 51% to about 45,000 with EVs down 52% to 35,000 and PHEVs down 38% to 10,000.

Domestic brands are in trouble again, with a decline of 26% to just 38.1% share, but US brands are taking an even bigger hit at -29.7% to just 9% share. European brands are down 16.5% to 25.2% share, Japanese brands are down 9.9% to 24.2% share and surprisingly enough South-Korean brands are the best performers at just -6.9% to 3.6% share. This is still the second-lowest share in the past twelve months and a far cry from the over 11% share regularly hit in 2012. The worst hit are the French brands, down another 72.3% on an already abysmal score in January 2018.

Brands

In the brands ranking, leader Volkswagen untypically loses share with sales down 21.2%, just when its nearest rivals Toyota and Honda gain share with sales down by single digits as does Nissan in 5th place. Geely suffers as well with a loss of almost 30% but stays the best selling domestic brand at #4 ahead of Changan in 6th place as the only brand in the top-8 to improve its sales year-on-year, leapfrogging both Buick and Haval, down by 26% and 31.8% respectively. Audi (+5.7%) is also up and reclaims its luxury crown from Mercedes-Benz (-13%) and BMW (-5.5%). Roewe gains share with sales down 3.6% to pass Chevrolet, in big trouble as the biggest loser in the top-15 at -39%. GAC is up 8.9% and passes Dongfeng (-22.5%) and Chery (-12.1%), as well as Baojun (-55.4%) which is the biggest loser in the top-35. Just over a year ago, Baojun was the rising star of the domestic brands together with Geely, as both brands were showing streaks of double digit gains and storming up the charts. In December 2018 Baojun was even briefly the #2 Chinese brand after Haval, but the brand has fallen on hard times in 2019, and even its more premium models are unable to turn that tide. In January, just over 37% of its sales came from those models, all launched within the last 9 months. Sister brand Wuling is in even greater trouble as sales of its sole model Hongguang are collapsing (-69.6%).  BYD (-42.1% to #19), JAC (-44.5% to #31) and BAIC (-53.8% to #34 with just 2,000 EV sales) are also in trouble due to their bet on electric cars which are struggling due to reduced government subsidies. This is expected to be a short term issue as EV sales should pick up again later this year.

FAW on the other hand is on a hot streak after struggling for years. Its sales are up over 75% in January, helped by the rise in Hongqi deliveries. The domestic luxury brand, in the ‘80s and ‘90s exclusively available to members of the Party, has had an influx of new models recently and this is paying off. Hongqi sales are on a streak of broken records, only interrupted by a brief dip in December, but January has continued the streak with the 9th new monthly record in the last 10 months, as the brand now accounts for almost half of FAW sales. Bestune is responsible for the other half and is up 58.4% on last year, however this is not thanks to the new crossover introduced in the last 15 months but rather thanks to the two carryover models from before the brand makeover, when it was still called Besturn. The X40 crossover has its best month in 2 years and the B30 has also found a new audience, now sold mostly as an EV. Among other would-be luxury domestic brands, Lynk & Co is down 28.4% to #33, Wey is down 37.1% to #37 and Borgward is down 54.5% to #46.

MG is up 8.4% at #21, making it the second best performer in the top-25 behind GAC and ahead of Ford, finally back in the black after a few very tough years for the American brand. The updated Focus and Escort, as well as the Territory crossover help Ford recover, and the model changeover from Kuga to Escape appears to be going smoothly and should add even more volume in coming months. Likewise for Hyundai and Kia the struggles of recent years also appear to be over, with Hyundai growing 4% at #17 and Kia outperforming the market at -18.7% in 20th place. JLR also appears to have bottomed out, with Land Rover up 22.4% to #44 and Jaguar up 121.3% to #49. Cadillac (-26.9% at #22) on the other hand is struggling due to the end of production of the popular XTS, and Jeep is down 80% to #50.

Jetta is the best selling new brand at #24 which is its highest monthly ranking so far, outselling Mazda (-14.9%) and the former best selling newcomer Jetour (+25.1% at #28). Volvo continues to aggressively grow in China, with a 27.8% gain in January and into the top-30 thanks to the new generation S60L and the addition of the XC40. Mitsubishi is down 29.6% in 35th place but leapfrogs Skoda, down by almost two thirds. Zotye is down by more than 70% to #43 and is now outsold by its subsidiary Dorcen at #40.

Among French brands, Peugeot is the best performer at -65.4% to just over 2,250 sales, followed by Citroën losing almost three quarters of its sales at less than 1.500 sales and Renault, down over 80%  to fewer than 600 deliveries despite the addition of two promising new models in recent months with the City K-ZE and Captur. To see less than 4,000 sales for PSA in January is just a token of how competitive the Chinese market is and how quickly a brand’s luck can turn. In 2016, PSA sold over 600,000 cars in China and now they’re on the brink of annihilation. Some domestic brands are also on the chopping block: Brilliance with just 2,000 sales, Changhe with just 660 sales, Haima with less than 600 sales, Landwind with just 239 sales, Yema at 164 sales, Leopaard with 141 sales, Qoros with 92 sales, Lifan with 50 sales, Bisu with 30 sales and Luxgen with 22 sales. Hawtai has already been killed, Traum and Link Tour are both gone again, less than 2 years after their introduction. And some of the EV startups that promised fantastic sales numbers are failing as well: Nio is burning cash at lightning speed but sold just 1,600 cars in January, Great Wall’s Ora brand is down by almost two thirds to 1,300 sales, Weltmeister and Neta managed just over 1,000 sales, Xpeng just 630 sales and Denza despite a new model delivered fewer than 300 cars to its dealerships. Geely’s Geometry even dipped below the 100 sales in January. Even JAC-Volkswagen’s Sol EV brand appears stillborn, with two months of zero deliveries after just 1.639 units in October and November combined. Not a very welcoming environment for newcomer Leading Ideal, but so far its first month seems promising at #57 but in the coming months we’ll see if deliveries keep their momentum.

In the models ranking the Nissan Sylphy is back on top for the third time in the last four months, despite a 17% year-over-year drop. Its main rival Volkswagen Lavida is down 39.6% into second place. With the Toyota Corolla at #3, on the podium for the third time in the last 12 months, and the Volkswagen Bora up 20.8%, we have a top-4 entirely consisting of sedans. The Haval H6 is both the best selling Chinese model and the best selling crossover, followed by the Changan CS75 in 7th place and the Geely Boyue in 9th place. The CS75 is less than 700 sales away from becoming the best selling Chinese nameplate for the first time ever. The Geely EC7 is the best selling Chinese sedan and makes it 4 domestic models in the top-10, which hasn’t happened at all in 2019. In fact, in June and July 2019 the H6 was the only domestic model in the top-10. In contrast, there are only three VWs in the top-10, which last happened in May and June 2019. The Volkswagen Tayron is the brand’s best selling crossover in 12th place. The GAC Trumpchi GS4 is back up to 16th place as sales more than doubled thanks to an updated version and the introduction of the GS4 Coupe version.  The Roewe RX5 is up 21.6% in 20th place, the Buick GL8 is up 68.1% to #25, which means for the first time ever it’s Buick’s best seller in China as well as China’s best selling MPV as the Wuling Hongguang is down almost 70% to #43 with its lowest monthly sales volume since its launch. . In its third month of sales, the Honda Breeze is up to #30 and already at 60% of its original Honda CR-V (#11). Combined, these two nameplates of the same car would rank 4th just 300 sales off the podium and making it by far the best selling crossover in China. The MG ZS is up 43.4% to #33, the Buick Regal is up by more than 25% to #39 but the Excelle GT is down more than 70% to #58 and the Verano is down over 87% to #188.

Records

The Audi A3 sets a new monthly sales record at #53, passing the 10,000 sales milestone for the first time since launching local production in 2014. Other nameplates setting record monthly sales are the Toyota Avalon passing both the 10k and 12k for the first time at #38, the Toyota Yaris L hatchback at #66, the Honda Envix in its 10th month of sales at#74, Hongqi H5 at #83, Cadillac CT5 at #99 and Buick Enclave at #123, both in their third month of sales, and the SWM G05 at #173 just 27 sales off becoming the brand’s best seller.

Newcomers

Best selling newcomer (<12 months) is the Chevrolet Monza at #15, replacing the Cruze and cannibalizing the Cavalier (down almost 90% at #147). Combined, sales of Chevrolet’s compact sedans Chevrolet are still down by more than 45% on January 2019. The Changan Oushang X7 at #29 and the aforementioned Honda Breeze at #30 follow, ahead of the Jetta VS5 at #32, reaching a new highest ranking but still down slightly from its volume record set last November. The BYD Song Pro and Toyota Avalon follow at #37 and #38, with the Honda Envix at #74 and the Hongqi HS5 at #87.

We welcome the arrival of the Geely ICON at #175 this month, with striking design unlike any other Geely product. Also all-new are the Ford Escape at #208, as the new generation now get the American name as opposed to the European name Kuga its predecessors had. The Denza X arrives at #336, the brand’s second model and its first crossover, which is a clone of the BYD Tang and available as EV and PHEV. We also welcome the Borgward BX3 as the brand’s fourth and smallest crossover and last but not least January marks the arrival of yet another all-new Chinese EV brand, as Leading Ideal has started deliveries of its first model, the ONE (which is actually a PHEV) landing at #224.
