China car sales analysis February 2020

As China has basically been shut down most of February, the production and sales of cars has been suspended as well, which has had a devastating effect on car sales in the country. An 82.1% decline results in just 216,500 wholesale deliveries for the month, the lowest monthly volume since February 2005. As the month progressed, factories started to come back online, dealerships and deliveries started to recover, with sales down 96% in the first week, -89% in the second week, -83% in the third week and “just” -63% in the fourth week. However, don’t expect a return to normal levels anytime soon. While more than 90% of China’s dealers had reopened as of mid March, they reported showroom traffic to be just 53% of normal levels. Amid all this uncertainty, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has declined to update its prediction for new-vehicle sales for the entire year. Another organization, the China Passenger Car Association which is connected to dealerships, attempted to make a prediction this week, and in an optimistic scenario they expect annual sales of new passenger vehicles to drop nearly 10%. However, such a forecast is based on the assumption that China can keep up efforts to curb the spread of the virus, they noted. If a new wave of infections emerge in the country, which is likely to be triggered by cases that originate outside China, the new-car market will contract more severely.

Back to February, when crossovers and SUVs outperformed the market, with a 79.6% decline to grab a record 49.1% of the Chinese passenger car market and up nearly 2.5 percentage points on January, the previous record. Sedan sales were down 83.7% to 44.1% share, which is a new low. MPV sales are once again taking the biggest hit, down 83.8% in January for a 6.7% share, which is surprisingly up on last month. Within those figures, sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids plummeted 75% to about 12,900 with EVs down 57% to 10,680 and PHEVs down 81% to 2,228. No fuel cell vehicles were sold during the month.

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Chery_Tiggo_5x-SUVFor a change, domestic brands outperformed import brands, with a decline of 77% to grab a record 53.8% of the Chinese passenger car market, the first time domestic Chinese brands hold more than half of their home market since the 1980s. One explanation for this is that local brands were faster to start up their factories again after the shutdown, as most foreign manufacturers repatriated their upper management to their own countries and were slower to get the lines running again. Japanese brands were down 83% to 17.1% share, the lowest in nearly 2 years. European brands were down 84.5% to 22.1% share, US brands were down 89.1% to just 5.6% share, the lowest since at least 2003 (our detailed data doesn’t go further back) and South-Korean brands were the weakest performers at-94.6% to 1.5% share at a volume of just 3,240 cars. However, for March it appears the tables will be turned again, as stores operated by Chinese brands reported the lowest level of showroom traffic at 35% of levels considered normal for this time of the year. Dealerships marketing domestically built, foreign mainstream brands saw showroom traffic climb back to 54% of normal levels while stores selling luxury brands and imported cars reported the most optimistic showroom traffic, at 57% of normal levels, according to a survey by the China Automobile Dealers Association.

Brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Geely_Binyue-SUVKeep in mind that the brands ranking this month is less a reflection of actual sales performance than it is luck of the draw of being more or less dependent on markets that are heaviest hit with the shutdown as well as being able to restart factories after March 11. Still, the relative strength of domestic brands is clear on top of the brands ranking where Volkswagen is not the best selling brand in China for the first time since it arrived in China in 1984. This month, local hero Geely becomes the second brand since then to top the Chinese brands charts, thanks to sales down “just” 75.3%, also helped by its marketing campaign promoting its new air filtration technology that, although unproven, claims to keep the coronavirus outside the vehicle. VW is in second place, followed by Nissan and in fourth place we find the big “winner” of the month, as Chery managed to keep its loss of sales contained to -35.8%, and with its sister brand Jetour at #22 (-47.2%), these are the only brands in the top-35 to lose less than half of their sales on February 2019. Second best performer in the top-10 is Mercedes-Benz at -69.3%, allowing it to climb to #6 behind Changan but ahead of Toyota. Audi stays ahead of BMW while Haval completes the top-10 which includes four domestic brands, four German brands and two Japanese brands.

Honda is out of the top-10 with sales down over 90%, followed by GAC Trumpchi, BYD and Dongfeng. Jetta is still the best selling new brand at #15, a new ranking record and up 9 spots on January. General Motors and its subsidiaries is hit full frontal,  with Baojun down 88.3% to #17, sandwiched between SAIC MG and SAIC Roewe, while Buick is the biggest loser of the top-25 at -92.9% in 19th place just ahead of newcomer Tesla. Chevrolet is down 88.1% to #24 just ahead of Wuling, and Cadillac managed to deliver just 157 cars in February, just 1.4% of a year earlier. Tesla has indeed started local production of the Model 3 in its Shanghai Gigafactory and makes its first appearance in this ranking with 3.900 wholesale deliveries. Ford once again outperforms the market at -61.1%, but that’s not enough to prevent it from immediately being outsold by its American EV rival in Tesla’s first month of reporting.

Among top-50 brands, Hyundai is the hardest hit at -95.7% to #28 and sister brand Kia is also one of the biggest losers at -92.8% to #31, with Mitsubishi (#46) and Volvo (#53) also close to 95% loss rates. Niche EV brands Nio (#40), Weltmeister (#42) and Denza (#67) are the only brands to actually sell more than they did a year ago.

No less than 13 brands didn’t deliver a single vehicle in China in February, among others sister brands Dorcen and Zotye, ambitious EV-startup Xpeng, Lifan, Qoros and as the only import brand Infiniti.

In the models ranking the Nissan Sylphy tops the charts for the fourth time in the last five months ,with the Haval H6 once again China’s best selling domestic model and its best selling crossover, ahead of the Volkswagen Bora, which outsells its sibling Lavida for the first time since August 2012. Crashing into a whopping #4 spot in its first month of sales is the Tesla Model 3, of course helped by this unnaturally low overall market volume but nonetheless an impressive performance. The Changan CS75 and Chery Arrizo GX make it three domestic nameplates in the top-6, while the Geely EC7, Chery Tiggo 5X and Geely Boyue make it six domestics in the top-10. Honorable mention for the Mercedes-Benz GLC at #7, the best selling import crossover for the first time, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class at #11, also its highest ranking ever. For the first time in a few decades, there’s just a single VW model in the top-10, while Chery and Geely each have two, for the very first time. The Jetour X70 also hits a ranking record at #14, while the Jetta VS5 is up another 16 spots to a record 16th place, which makes it the #8 best selling crossover in China this month.

Best selling South Korean car is the Kia K2 at #51, responsible for  88.6% of total brand sales, followed by the Hyundai Reina at #85, responsible for almost half of its brand’s sales. Best selling French model is the Citroën C5 Aircross at #198 with just 195 deliveries, followed by sibling model Peugeot 4008 at #219. Renault’s highest ranking model is the Captur with just 18 deliveries. For Cadillac, the XT5 is the best performer at #255 while no Acura model is above 14 deliveries. Land Rover has no model above 12 deliveries while the highest ranking Jaguar is at 6 deliveries.

Newcomers

Best selling newcomer (<12 months) is obviously the Tesla Model 3 at #4, also making it the best selling EV in China with a 36.5% share. The Jetta VS5 is next, followed by the BYD Song Pro at #41 and the Jetta VS7 at #42 in its second month of sales. The GAC Aion S and BYD Qin EV are in the last spots of the top-50, ahead of the JAC Jiayue A5 (#67), Geely Xingyue (#69) and Ford Escape (#70), followed by the Geely Jiaji (#75), Mercedes-Benz GLB (#78) and Hongqi HS5 (#79)

Besides the Model 3, we welcome the arrival of the Chevrolet Menlo this month, landing at #265 with its first 64 deliveries. The Menlo is Chevy’s first EV in China, as the Bolt is not sold there. It is based on the mildly successful Buick Velite 6 (8,342 sales since its launch in 2018) and outsells that model immediately as Buick delivered just 12 units in February. Thanks to a government subsidy of up to 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,000 USD), the Menlo is the lowest-priced compact electric crossover in China at 159,990 yuan (about $22,500 USD) after subsidies, which is also lower than the base price of the Chevrolet Equinox crossover in China.
