The Han is perhaps one of the most important Chinese rivals to the Tesla Model 3, ahead of the Xpeng P7. This is BYD’s flagship sedan and the brand is planning to use this as its breakthrough vehicle for the European and US markets.

The BYD Han is available in EV an PHEV version, with the EV version available with two battery options. Dimensions are 4,980/1,910/1,495mm with a wheelbase of 2,920mm. This makes it larger than the Model 3 and just as long as the Model S.

BYD Han BEV specs:

The FWD version has an output of 163kW, while the AWD version adds a 200kW motor on the rear wheels. The latter sprints from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds. DC fast charging is available, charging the Han from 30 to 80% in 25 minutes.

  • FWD 65 kWh battery: range 506 km (314 miles) NEDC, price 229,800 yuan (€27.900,- / US$ 33,100)
  • FWD 77 kWh battery: range 605 km (376 miles) NEDC, price 255,800 yuan (€31.100,- / US$ 36,900)
  • AWD 77 kWh battery: range 550 km (342 miles) NEDC, price 279,500 yuan (€33.900,- / US$ 40,300)

These prices all undercut those of the Tesla Model 3, which is priced from 291.800 yuan to 419.800 yuan. The Xpeng P7 starts at a comparable 229.900 yuan but tops out higher at 349.000 yuan.

BYD Han PHEV specs:

  • all-electric range of up to 81 km (50 miles) NEDC, over 800km (500 miles) total.
  • 13 kWh battery
  • 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds
  • 2.0L gasoline engine with 140 kW and a 180 kW electric motor
  • Price 219,800 yuan (€26.700,- / US$ 31,700)

  1. How come such a big sedan priced so low. If it has the drive as smooth as the full size luxury sedan/saloon from European, Asian makes, then it could easily eat into the sales of those vehicles.

And the PHEV version with 81 km NEDC which is still 60 km WLTP with the price of $31,700 is still great for most peoples daily commutes/weekend shopping.

July was the 1st month that this car went on sale, we have to see how August is shaping up. If it really sells well, then it could influence the overall market greatly.
