US sales: May 2017, models

After discussing the US auto brand sales ranking for May, let’s take a closer look at the models ranking.

Top 10

At the front the RAM Pickup outsold the Chevrolet Silverado for the third month in a row, though only by a slender margin of a little over 1,000 units – not yet enough to overtake its arch rival in YTD sales, though this remains a possibility in the coming months. Behind the pickups once again the leading non-truck car was compact SUV – this time it was the Toyota RAV4, which managed to claw back some space to the class-leading Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V, both of which ranked relatively poorly in 7th and 8th in May. The surprise in the top-10 this month came from Honda Accord, whose sales were up 5.0% and which ranked 5th, the highest it has been since December’15 (though, YTD, the model is still down 7.3%). Otherwise it was business as usual, with Toyota CamryHonda Civic and Toyota Corolla all continuing its slide by recording sales drops of 10% or so.

Top 10-50

The best performers in the Top 10-50 range were Hyundai Tucson, whose sales growth of 43.8% was enough to place it the top-50 for the second month in a row, a first for the model, and Honda HR-V, whose sales growth of 29.0% placed it in the top-50 for the first time ever. Other models that put in a good performance include the Toyota Highlander, which matched its performance so far this year by recording sales growth of over 20%, Ford Explorer, whose growth of 17.6% was high enough to place it 12th, matching its best-ever ranking, as well as the Subaru OutbackDodge Grand Caravan, the new Mazda CX-5 and the facelifted Kia Forte, all of which recorded growth of over 20%, above their YTD performance of a little over 10%.

May was less kind to Chevrolet Cruze, which despite gaining 2.7% of sales relative to May’16 should not be too happy with its performance (YTD its sales gain has been over 40% until now), and Hyundai Elantra, which went from gaining over 20% each month so far this year to losing almost 20% this month. To no one’s surprise agony continued for mid-sized sedans (Nissan AltimaFord Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata all lost sales by more than 10%), but also for some models that until recently were doing rather well: Nissan Sentra (sales down 9.1%), Jeep Cherokee (sales down 23.8%) and Kia Soul (sales down 23.2%). Finally, May marked a particularly poor performance Hyundai Santa Fe, whose sales fell by a third compared to May’16, a huge under-performance given the models YTD growth of over 50% over the period January-April’17.

Top 50-100

In the top 50-100, the standout performance came once again from the new Nissan Titan, making May the third month in a row that the model placed in the top 100, which it had been absent from for almost nine years before that. Other great performances came from Infiniti Q50/Q60 (up 75.6%), interest in which seems to have picked up with the introduction of the new, turbocharged-engines and the the Q60 coupe version, VW Golf (up 61.0%), making this the seventh straight month the model ranked in the top-75, and Ram ProMaster (up 43.7%), allowing the model to enter the top-100 for only the fourth time ever. The losers this months were the Jeep twins, Compass and Patriot (sales down by over 40% and 60%, respectively), the perennially under-appreciated Mazda Mazda3 (sales down 33.1%), and the Ford Mustang (sales down 23.5%, only slightly less bad than its YTD loss of almost 30%), whose loess is made all the more stark when contrasted with arch-rival Chevrolet Camaro‘s 34.6% gain.

Other notable developments

Maserati_Quattroporte-US-car-sales-statisticsOutside the top-100 the best performance once again came from the new and much-improved Mazda CX-9 (up 221.8%) and Nissan Armada (up 213.2%), the Jaguar F-Pace (up 116.2%, and which by now sells almost as many units each month as the combined total of Jaguar’s other models), as well as the new-for-2017 Buick LaCrosse (up 88.7%). By comparison, May saw the sales collapses of Land Rover LR4 (presumably a break before the new Discovery arrives) and Chevrolet Spark (sales were only a tenth of what they were last year!), and large declines from models that were probably hoping for much better performances: BMW 7-seriesFiat 500XMercedes-Benz GLA and CLA all saw their sales fall by around a half compared to this time last year.

New nameplates

Volkswagen_Atlas-US-car-sales-statisticsThe main new nameplate to enter in May was the long-awaited VW Atlas, which did well out of the blocks, selling 1,610, outselling e.g the Volvo XC60. Nonetheless, the company has much higher ambitions for the model than this, and it’ll be interesting how well it does in the coming months. The other new entrant is the Lexus LC, which does well with over 400 units sold out of the blocks. The bestselling new nameplates (<12 months) are the Cadillac XT5 at #77 and Buick Envision in # 92. After a steady increase, Infiniti QX30 suffered yet another bad month in May, selling under 1,000 units compared to almost 3,000 in March. The hybrid Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq cousins did well in May, selling 2,660 and 1,827, respectively (a record for the latter), though so far the Niro has been unable to crack the 3,000 ceiling after coming close in the past three months. Also climbing the sales charts steadily is the new Toyota C-HR, though at 1,848 it still sold only about a fifth of what the segment-leading Jeep Renegade sold. Finally, the Chevrolet Bolt EV sets a new monthly sales record at 1,566 units.

New sales data

McLaren_720S-US-car-sales-statisticsWe welcome sales data for the McLaren brand for the first time to CarSalesBase: McLaren Sports Series (55 sold), and McLaren Super Series (2 sold), compared to, for example, 105 units sold for the Audi R8.

About Krzysztof Wozniak

Kriss grew up in Poland reading German car magazines, before moving to England and graduating to the British magazines, which he still considers the best in the world and continues reading them after he'd moved to the US. In college he promised himself he's buy himself a used Porsche before he turned 30 (not to be accused of having a mid-life crisis), but instead family needs dictated a Subaru Outback. Still waiting for that perfect moment to buy a used 2008-ish Cayman...
You can find all his articles Here.

  1. Hi Kriss, be careful with Maserati models data. I am afraid you have mistaken the 2017 ytd figures for the May 2017 ones…..!!!
    Have a nice day

@Leo – thanks for pointing out the error, got some of my columns mixed up. I updated the tables and overview to reflect the updated numbers, which for full clarity also included Bentley, McLaren and Porsche

  2. Rick M says:

Two years ago I came across an article where the Nissan sales chief (Nunoz?) outlined his approach to get the new Titan sales up. Interesting phased strategy, first in just 2 states with just one model, and then a slow but steady intro of more states and new models. His idea: “It’s very hard to lure loyal F-150, Silverado or even RAM owners into something different”. His strategy seems to gain a bit of traction.

    972. That’s how many Infiniti Q60’s were sold last May. Seems missing ;))

Let me know what you think of this article. Thanks!
