US sales: February 2017, models

After discussing the US auto brand sales ranking for February, let’s zoom in on the models.

It may only be February, but there is a clear picture emerging as to how the Top 10 will look like in 2017. As always, the top Top 3 is occupied by the domestic large pickups  – in February Ram Pickup stumbled a bit, registering an uncharacteristically low growth rate of 1.3%, while Chevrolet Silverado recovered from a poor performance to record a growth rate of 17.1%. Next follow the compact crossovers – in some months, such as in February, the Top 4-6 positions will be occupied exclusively by such models. Of those the Nissan Rogue is emerging as the top performer, once again gaining over 50% in sales compared to the year prior, and placing 4th for only the second time in its history. The new Honda CR-V is gaining sales nicely, as is the Ford Escape which was facelifted early in 2016; less so the Toyota RAV4, whose relative under-performance combined with continued sales decline for its Corolla and Camry stablemates results in Toyota being shut out of the Top 6 for the second month in a row. It is a similar story for the other top brands and their compact and mid-sized mainstream offerings – Nissan saw sales fall for both the Sentra and the Altima, as did Honda for the Civic and Accord, though the brand that should really despair is Ford, with both the Focus and Fusion losing over 30% in sales compared to Feb’16, or Chevrolet, whose Malibu lost over 40% in sales (though the Cruze did gain 18.2%).

Beyond this, there were some notable performances in the Top 10-50 of the rankings. Nice gains were made by Hyundai Santa Fe and its Elantra stablemate, both of whose growth rates were almost identical to last month (a bit over 50% and 33%, respectively). The former’s sales gains are surprising compared to the poor performance of its Kia Sorento cousin, especially given the latter’s lower age. Other models that continued their winning stream include the seemingly evergreen Jeep Grand Cherokee (sales up 23.0%), Toyota Highlander (sales up 27.8%), which is clearly gaining on the misfortune of its Honda Pilot competitor, the Highlander’s tough 4Runner stablemate (up 28.7%), the geriatric Dodge Journey and the Nissan Pathfinder (both up 24.2%), the new GMC Acadia (up 25.9%), the new and almost-stylish Subaru Impreza (up 22.2%), and the Jeep Renegade (up 17.1%).

On the other side cars whose sales remained in the doldrums include Hyundai Sonata (sales down 16.3%), whose fortunes now seem to lie on whether customers will take to its recently-revealed facelift, Jeep Cherokee (sales down 9.3%), which seems to be suffering from new competition both in the segment and internally (from the Renegade and the hotly-anticipated new Compass), Ford Edge (sales down 10.7%), Nissan Versa (down 19.4%), Honda Pilot (down 15.4%), whose latest uber-conservative version clearly cannot connect with buyers its blocky predecessor could, and the VW Jetta (down 14.5%), the only high-selling VW model to lose sales in 2017. Other things to notice in the Top 10-50 include the continued popularity of the Dodge Grand Caravan (sales up 11.6%), and the fact that its de-facto replacement Chrysler Pacifica cracked the Top 40 for the first time this month, as well as the continued underperformance of the Kia Optima (sales down 7.7%).

Further down there were some standout performances came from Bentley Continental GT (sales up 89.2 percent), enjoying the halo effect of its Bentayga stablemate, Mitsubishi Outlander (sales up 72.8 percent), and BMW 3/4-series (sales up 57.1 percent), recovering from a really bad 2016. Other cars that enjoyed good performances were Porsche Macan (sales up 55.6 percent), Audi Q7 (sales up 49.8 percent, unlike the Volvo XC90, whose sales have collapsed by almost the same amount), Mercedes-Benz E-class (sales up 47 percent), and the resurgent VW trio: Golf (sales up 60.3 percent), Beetle (sales up 45.8 percent), and Passat (sales up 39.6 percent). Good time continued rolling for the new Audi R8 (sales up 622.2 percent), the new Mazda CX-9 (sales up 367.9 percent), the new Nissan Titan and its expanding range (sales up 181.9 percent), the decidedly not new Mitsubishi Mirage (sales up 145.2 percent), Nissan Armada (sales up 109.4 percent), and the Lincoln Continental (sales up 83 percent).

February was a really bad month for Lexus model (IS/RC duo down 43.9 percent, ES down 29.2 percent), Kia Sedona (sales down 47.1 percent), and the Jeep twins, Patriot (sales down 48.2 percent) and Compass (sales down 62 percent), with the brand clearly preparing for the arrival of the all-new Compass. Also not doing so great were Nissan Frontier (sales down 30.7 percent), Toyota Avalon (sales down 34.1 percent), Kia Soul (sales down 35 percent), Toyota Prius C (sales down 39.4 percent), Mini Hardtop 2-door (sales down 49.1%) and Chevrolet Sonic (sales down 49.5 percent).

Only one new car made its debut this month: Hyundai Ioniq, with a grand total of one unit. From among models that debuted in the last few months the most remarkable performance came from the Kia Niro, Ioniq’s crossover-lite cousin, which sold over 2,000 units in only its second month on the market, outselling all models in Toyota’s Prius family bar the Prius liftback straight out of the gate, and remarkably selling almost 40% of the volume of the latter, most-well-established hybrid on the market. By contract Volvo V90 Cross Country has not yet started to pick up steam, while sales of its S90 sister have fallen back below 500 after topping 1,000 once in December’16. It was a similar story for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which fell back below 1,000 and its main competitor Nissan Leaf.

  1. Ford ESCORT???? Where did this come from?

  2. Oh no, rusty and crappy Ford Escort has now returned from grave to haunt us!

  3. Krzysztof Wozniak says:

Ford – please, PLEASE don’t bring the new Escort here!

  4. Largely thanks to the usual suspect (Top 3) + a dozen of blockbuster cross-over’s the US auto market stays afloat. But the moment these models stall, mayhem is bound to happen.
