US sales: December 2016, models

After discussing the US auto brand sales ranking for December, let’s zoom in on the models.

The Top 10 sales number can be viewed as an exaggerated image of what the recent trends in the US have been: big sales but only so-so growth for the three market-leading pickups, great sales growth by SUVs and crossovers, which placed fourth, fifth and sixth overall, and which all saw their sales grow by over 10 percent year-on-year, and finally the shrinking sales of the mainstream Compact and Mid-sized models. That is not to say that December was not without its surprises. The biggest surprise came from Nissan Rogue, which clearly benefited from its tie-in promotional campaign alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – it sold 40,000 units, a growth of over 50 percent compared to Dec’15, giving the model its highest-ever ranking (4th, up two spots on previous-higher 6th recorded in August and best selling non-pickup) as well as record sales (40,000, up over 20 percent on the previous-high in July). By contrast, sales of Chevrolet Silverado fell by 13.8 percent compared to December 2015, the third time in 2016 that the sales of the model fell by double-digits compared to a year earlier. Also, it seems that Honda Civic‘s honeymoon is now officially over – it has recorded a fall in monthly sales for the the third time since September, and ranked outside of the Top 8 for the second month in a row. But it’s not all bad news for Honda, as sales of the new and outgoing (presumably heavily discounted) CR-V were up 21.1 percent on sales in Dec’15. After stocks of the outgoing model have been exhausted, the next few months will tell us exactly how well the new model has been received, but the signs so far are good.

Outside the Top 10 two models are continuing their outstanding performance from November: Toyota Highlander (sales up 57.9 percent) and Chevrolet Malibu (sales up 87.3 percent). Also doing great are the new Subaru Impreza, whose sales rose by 76.3 percent compared to Dec’15, and the outgoing Chevrolet Equinox, which is clearly being sold at large discounts to make space on the forecourts for the new model, placing it just outside of the Top 10 in December on the back of a 24.6 growth in sales. Other models that did well were Hyundai Elantra, which made up for its November fall in sales by selling 37.3 percent more models in December, Subaru Outback (sales up 28.8 percent) and Lexus RX (sales up 25.1 percent). Much less happy with their December performance will be two Mid-sized stalwarts: Ford Fusion lost sales yet again, with the 25.2 percent drop its highest of 2016, but things were even worse for Hyundai Sonata, which lost almost 40 percent in sales compared to Dec’16. Meanwhile, Jeep Cherokee lost more than 30 percent for the second month in a row.

Chevy Spark

Further down there were some standout performances came from  Chevrolet Spark (sales up 207.6 percent), BMW X1 (sales up 136.6 percent), Mazda CX-9 (sales up 115.8 percent) and Nissan Armada (sales up 114 percent). Other cars that enjoyed good performances were Ford Flex (sales up 78.1 percent), the new GMC Acadia (sales up 67.8 percent), BMW X3 (sales up 59.2 percent), and GMC Savana (sales up 55.2 percent), while Nissan Titan (sales up 331.8 percent), Audi Q7 (sales up 175.4 percent), VW Passat (sales up 101.4 percent), Honda HR-V (sales up 90.7 percent), Chevrolet Volt (sales up 74.6 percent), and VW Golf (sales up 56.9 percent) continued their strong performance so far this year.

Chrysler 300

December was not a good month for Chrysler 300 (sales down 26.2 percent), Chevrolet SS (sales down 29.9 percent), the aging Jeep Patriot (sales down 30.3 percent), Porsche Boxster (sales down 30.4 percent), Buick Enclave (sales down 36 percent), Mercedes-AMG GT (sales down 38.9 percent), and the BMW X6 (sales down 48.7 percent). In addition, Kia K900 (sales down 50.6 percent), Fiat 500X (sales down 57.8 percent), Lexus GS (sales down 61.3 percent), Chrysler Sebring/200 (sales down 69.2 percent), and Dodge Dart (sales down 77.3 percent) and continued on their downward spiral this year.

Two new models hit the showrooms this month: Chevrolet Bolt EV, debuting in 219th spot with almost 600 units (about a third of what Nissan Leaf sold in December) and Honda Clarity FCV.  Among recent launches, Buick Envision kicked up a gear as it sold 3,931 units, almost double its previous monthly record, Lincoln Continental cracked 2,000 sales per month and ranked 155th, while Infiniti QX30 entered the top 200 on the sales charts by selling close to 750 units.

About Krzysztof Wozniak

Kriss grew up in Poland reading German car magazines, before moving to England and graduating to the British magazines, which he still considers the best in the world and continues reading them after he’d moved to the US. In college he promised himself he’s buy himself a used Porsche before he turned 30 (not to be accused of having a mid-life crisis), but instead family needs dictated a Subaru Outback. Still waiting for that perfect moment to buy a used 2008-ish Cayman…

  1. Always interesting to read, thanks Krzysztof!

Still amazing to see 7 out of 10 best selling cars YTD are non-American. Unthinkable for foreign brands in Europe.
USA loves Subaru whereas it doesn’t seem to fit in Europe. Even DS with old models and forever struggling Lexus do a better job. I see Subaru leaving the European market in the next 5 years.

    Losagne,

You’re absolutely right. What’s more, if you exclude truck sales the number of cars from non-American brands from among the 10 best-selling cars is 8, with only Chevy Equinox and Ford Escape joining the party.

As for Subaru, this has been one of the biggest mysteries to me in recent years. While in Europe (or at least in Britain, as per their magazines that I read) Subaru has a reputation for solid but uncouth cars for people who actually venture off-road, in the US it’s the car of choice for well-off urbanites, especially in the parts of the country that get snow – sort of like Volvo
