Volvo

Volvo_XC60-US-car-sales-statisticsVolvo has been present in the US for decades, and its image remained unchanged for the majority of this time – staid, safe and family-friendly. This began to change in the late 1990s and early 2000s as models like the S40 and S60 targeted younger with more sporty design and dynamics. Having met with some success, Volvo in recent years (under new, Chinese ownership) decided to push decidedly upmarket, to come level with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus.

In the US the car that is still associated with Volvo, the XC90 large SUV, has only recently been replaced and it will be interesting to see whether its replacement can recapture the heady heights its predecessor managed, selling more than 30,000 units per year. The 60 series models are still doing well, and the 70/80 series models have just been replaced by the S90 sedan and upcoming V90 station wagon, of which a V90XC, a jacked-up estate, is expected to replace the well-known XC70. Another model that Volvo would do well to replace is the smaller 40 series, pulled out of the US in 2011 as the new generation became a hatchback, especially now that the Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA are selling like hot cakes. A crossover version should arrive in showrooms within a few years time as well.
