Sales of New Cars In Norway – Data, Trends, Charts & Analysis

Here you will find annual car sales figures for Norway. These statistics are Total Market Volumes, which include passenger cars as well as light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Since the late 1990s, the Norwegian car market has fluctuated between 110,000 and 190,000 annual sales. From a low of just over 110,000 sales in 2002, the market peaked at almost 175,000 sales five years later, before dropping 30% in two years time. From 2011 to 2014 the market has been relatively stable around 170,000 annual sales, before setting three consecutive annual records from 2015 to 2017. Sales dipped again in 2018 and 2019 with passenger car sales down but light commercial vehicle sales still up. The share of LCV sales of total car sales in Norway peaked in 2008 at 28%, way above the average of 21%, but have since dipped to an average of 18% since 2012 as the passenger car market has grown faster.

Norway is the largest market for EVs and PHEVs in Europe with 45.662 units in 2016, which gave them a 29,5% share of the Norwegian passenger car market that year. This grew to 33.025 EVs and 29.233 PHEVs for a combined 39,2% share in 2017, 49,1% in 2018 and 56% in 2019, with EVs making up 42% of the total passenger car market. Per end of 2016, 5% of all the cars on Norwegian roads had electric charging capabilities, with a market concentration of 21,5 registered plug-in cars per 1.000 persons, numbers that have naturally only increased since.

Norway Automotive Sales Data & Recent Highlights

As you can see, the Norwegian car sales market has been growing rapidly in recent years, with electric vehicles (EVs) taking a dominant market share. In 2022, EVs accounted for 89.7% of all new car registrations in Norway, making it the world’s first country to have more than 80% of new car sales being electric.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the growth of the Norwegian EV market. These include:

  • Government incentives: The Norwegian government offers a number of incentives for people to buy EVs, including tax breaks, free parking, and access to bus lanes.
  • Infrastructure: Norway has a well-developed charging infrastructure, with over 20,000 public chargers available across the country.
  • Public awareness: There is a high level of public awareness about the environmental benefits of EVs in Norway.

Despite the growth of the EV market, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed. These include:

  • The cost of EVs: EVs are still more expensive than traditional gasoline or diesel cars.
  • The range of EVs: The range of EVs is still limited compared to traditional cars.
  • The availability of EVs: The availability of EVs is still limited in some parts of Norway.
