IAA Frankfurt report: Cars from Mercedes-Benz to VW

October 4, 2015 by Rutger Van der Maar Leave a Comment

Mercedes-Benz A-Class facelift

Mercedes-Benz A-Class facelift

Mercedes-Benz revamped the A-Class, which features redesigned front and rear bumpers and is optionally available with LED High Performance headlamps. From the beginning of 2016 Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink will become available. The refreshed Mercedes-Benz A-Class comes with a range of no less than eight petrol engines, oddly with only two displacements: a 1.6-litre four-cylinder (A 160, A 180 , A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition & A 200) and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder (A 220, A 250, A 250 Sport and A 45 AMG) engine. The A 160 with 102 hp is the new entry-level model. It consumes 5.1 l/100 km (CO2-emissions 119 g/km) when opting for the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission, the manual version is slightly less efficient. The diesel range consists of five engines with two displacements: the 1.5-litre Renault engine is offered in the A 160 d, A 180 d and A 180 d BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, while the 2.2-litre Mercedes engine powers the A 200 d and A 220 d. Fuel consumption of the A 180 d BlueEFFIENCY Edition has been reduced slightly to 3.5 l/100 km (CO2-emissions 89 g/km). The A 220 d now offers 177 hp (+ 7 hp). The A 250 Sport now has an additional 7 hp (218 hp) over the regular A 250. Mercedes-Benz was slightly jealous seeing the Audi RS3 dethroning the A 45 AMG (“The best or nothing”, right?), so it has improved the performance of high-performance even further. The four-cylinder engine develops 381 hp (+ 21 hp) and a maximum torque of 475 Nm. Thanks to faster gear ratios, aerodynamic fine-tuning and the Dynamic Select driving mode it launches the A 45 AMG from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds than its predecessor.

European sales 2014 Coupe segment

June 4, 2015 by Bart Demandt Leave a Comment

The shift from mainstream to premium is best visible in the coupe segments, where sales of coupe models from mainstream brands have dropped by almost one fourth last year, while sales of premium brands have increased by a third to become more than twice as big a segment.

All models in the mainstream coupe segment lost volume in 2014, as the ranking has remained virtually the same as last year. The Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC still leads ahead of the Renault Megane Coupe and the Volkswagen Scirocco, all three with sales down less than the overall segment.

The Peugeot RCZ holds on to its fourth place, as its nearest competitors all lose more than half of their volumes, with the Hyundai Veloster taking the hardest hit and being overtaken by the Renault Laguna Coupe. The Nissan 370Z fares the least bad of all coupes, with sales down just 3% or 14 units despite its age. The 370Z is now not too far behind the Subaru BRZ anymore, its closest Japanese rear-wheel drive competitor. [Read more…]

European sales 2014 first half Coupe segment

August 22, 2014 by Bart Demandt Leave a Comment

Nissan-370Z-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeAfter a decline of 31% in 2013, the coupe segment in Europe sinks even further down this year, losing another quarter of its volume in the first six months. Again, all models in the top-10 are down double digits, with the exception this time of the Nissan 370Z thanks to a facelift. This is however still the slowest seller of the top-10.

The top-5 ranking remains stable, with the Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC still in charge of the segment, and the Renault Megane Coupe and VW Scirocco completing the podium.

The Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ twins are already back down again, as customers eagerly await a convertible version of either one of them. Rumors are, that Toyota would like to build one, but is dependent on Subaru, who actually builds both cars.

The Camaro may be the best performing Chevrolet with sales down “just” 12%, as the South-Korean models all suffer bigger losses due to the announcement of the brand’s withdrawal from the market next year. The Camaro and Corvette are here to stay, according to General Motors. [Read more…]

Luxury battle part three: Audi vs. BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz in roadsters

March 24, 2014 by Bart Demandt 1 Comment

Audi-TT-Geneva-Autoshow-2014The German Big three BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have faced each other for the European luxury car buyer for decades now, and the fight isn’t limited to high-volume segments. The compact roadster / coupe segment has been a battleground as well, although the three brands have followed entirely different strategies for this segment. Each of the three manufacturers has been in the lead of the compact roadster / coupe category at some point in the past 16 years, since the introduction of the first Audi TT.

Audi was the last to the game, as the BMW Z3 and Mercedes-Benz SLK were introduced in late 1995 and 1996 respectively, while the TT didn’t arrive until 1999. But it entered the segment with a bang, saleswise, immediately rising to the top in its first year of sales. [Read more…]

European sales 2013 Coupe segment

February 6, 2014 by Bart Demandt Leave a Comment

The coupe segment in Europe is suffering hard, down 31% in 2013 when compared to 2012. All models are down double digits with the exception of the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ, which were introduced in the second half of 2012.

Opel-Astra-GTC-Europe-sales-coupe-segmentAs a result, the ranking of the segment remains almost unchanged, with only the Japanese twins each moving up one place, and the Honda CR-Z tumbling down the ranking. The Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC holds on to the lead, followed by the Renault Megane Coupe and the Volkswagen Scirocco and the Peugeot RCZ.

The Hyundai Veloster and Renault Laguna take the hardest hits, each seeing its sales approximately cut in half, while the aforementioned CR-Z hybrid coupe loses two thirds of its volume year-over-year. [Read more…]
