Geneva Auto Show 2014: details of every new production model, part 1

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

Alfa Romeo’s 4C sports car has been well received, at the Geneva Motor Show Alfa Romeo launched the convertible version, which will have a total weight of less than 1,000 kg. The body of the 4C Spider is made from the same fiberglass and has the same four-cylinder 1750 Turbo petrol engine teamed with the TCT automatic twin clutch transmission.

Audi S1

Audi launched the new flagship models of the A1 range: the S1 and S1 Sportback. The S1, which also previews the upcoming A1 facelift with a new design for headlamps and bumpers, is fitted with a 2.0 TFSI engine, which produces 231 hp. The top speed is 250 km/h, while it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.8-5.9 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 7.0-7.1 l/100 km and the equivalent CO2 emissions 162-166 g/km.

Audi S3 Cabriolet

The drivetrain of the S3, S3 Sportback and S3 sedan found its way to the S3 Convertible, which means the S3 Cabriolet is fitted with the turbocharged 2.0 TFSI engine (300 hp). The open-top four-seater accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds; its electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h. The average fuel consumption is 7.1 liters per 100 km, while the equivalent CO2 emissions are just 165 g/km with the S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Audi TT

Audi’s most significant launch is the third generation TT. Horizontal lines dominate the front and rear section, the singleframe grille is broader and flatter than on the second generation TT, while the contour of the TT is an evolution of the second generation. At 4.18 meters, the Coupé is almost the same length as its predecessor, though its wheelbase has grown by 37 mm to 2,505 mm. The width is 1,832 mm (- 10 mm) and its height 1,353 which is identical to its predecessor. The optional S line exterior package makes the design of the bumpers, air intakes, singleframe grille, sills and rear diffusor larger. Like on the second generation, the third generation TT features an Audi Space Frame body made from aluminium and steel, but the kerb weight of the 2.0 TFSI is around 50 kg less than its predecessor. An interesting novelty is the fully digital instrument cluster called Audi virtal cockpit. Drivers can choose between up to three display modes: a classic view, infotainment mode, or in the TTS an additional sporty mode. The trunk has a capacity of 305 liters, slightly larger than its predecessor. For now, Audi offers three engine options: the 2.0 TDI Ultra (184 hp) with fuel consumption of 4.2 liters per 100 km (CO2 emissions 110 g/km), the 2.0 TFSI (230 hp) that consumes 6.8 liters per 100 km (CO2 emissions 159 g/km) and the TTS 2.0 TFSI (310 hp).

BMW 2-series Active Tourer

The 2-series Active Tourer is BMW’s first MPV. The front-wheel drive and New Mini-based Active Tourer will rival the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Citroën C4 Picasso and Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan. Measuring 4,324 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,555 mm high, its dimensions are almost similar to the B Class, as are its wheelbase of 2,670 mm and luggage capacity of 468 to 1,510 liters. At first, BMW offers two petrol and one diesel engine configuration. The 218i Active Tourer (136 hp) shares its turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with the Mini Cooper. Then there is a big gap to the turbocharged 2.0 four-cylinder 225i (231 hp), which will be filled by the 220i. For now there is just one diesel engine, the 2.0-liter 218d (150 hp), but less (216d) and more (220d) powerful versions are on its way, as are four-wheel drive versions (xDrive). A larger seven-seat model, rivaling the Grand C4 Picasso and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira, will follow. The 2-series Active Tourer will be launched during the summer.

BMW 4-series Gran Coupé

The 4-series Gran Coupé is the third body style in the 4-series line-up after the launch of the Coupé and Convertible last year. The 5-door body style is more spacious than its two-door siblings, but offers less room than the 3-series Gran Turismo. Its length of 4,638 mm, width of 1,825 mm and wheelbase of 2,810 mm are identical to the Coupé and Convertible, but thanks to its larger roofline, it offers more space for rear passengers. The height is 1,389 mm, 27 mm higher than the Coupé, whereas the luggage capacity has increased by 35 liters to 480 liters (1,300 liters with the rear seats folded down). The additional rear doors add 50 kg to the kerb weight of the 4-series. The engines are carried over from the Coupé and Convertible, which means the petrol range starts with the 2.0-liter 420i (184 hp) and 428i (245 hp), followed by the current top-of-the-range 3.0-liter six-cylinder 435i (306 hp). When the 4-series Gran Coupé arrives at the dealerships, there are just two diesel engines: the 2.0-liter 418d (143 hp) and 420d (184 hp), but more powerful versions (425d with 218 hp and the 3.0-liter six-cylinder 430d with 258 hp) will be launched later this year.

BMW X3 facelift

The refreshed BMW X3 gets a refreshed front section and shares the shape of its headlamps with the sportier X4. Besides the headlamps, BMW changed the grille, front and rear bumpers and used better materials in the interior. The X3 18d (150 hp) and 20d (190 hp) got more power en better fuel economy compared to the outgoing X3. The CO2 emissions dropped to 131 and 143 g/km respectively.

Cadillac ATS Coupe

Cadillac launched two new products at the Geneva Motor Show to the European audience: the ATS Coupe and the Escalade SUV. The ATS Coupe rides on the same 2,775 mm wheelbase as the sedan, but features wider front and rear tracks and standard 18-inch wheels. Power is supplied by the 276 hp 2.0-liter turbo engine, which delivers nearly 14 percent more torque.

Cadillac Escalade

The new fourth-generation Escalade is Cadillac’s flagship SUV and features a 6.2-liter V8 engine, which is more powerful and efficient compared to its predecessor.

Corvette Z06

Another European premiere is the Corvette Z06 with a 6.2-liter V8, which is expected to deliver an estimated 625 hp. The Z07 Performance Package adds components for extra aerodynamic downforce and track-focused Michelin tyres and Brembo brakes.

Citroën C1

Three of the leading debuts on the show are the new Citroën C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo triplets. Since its launch in 2005, Citroën sold more than 760,000 examples of the C1. It measures 3.46 meters in length (+ 20 mm), 1.62 meters in width (- 10 mm) and 1.45 meters in height (- 15 mm). The wheelbase (2.34 meters) is identical to its predecessor. However, with a base weight of 840 kg, the C1 is heavier too. Its luggage capacity of 196-780 liters became more useful and outclasses the new Aygo (168 liters) too. Like before, both 3-door and 5-door versions are available, all-new is the possibility of a two-tone paint job. Like Peugeot, Citroën offers an open-top body style of its city car. Buyers can choose from two engine options, starting with the e-VTi 68, a 1.0-liter engine by Toyota with CO2 emissions of only 88 g/km, while the VTi 68 ETG is mated to a semi-automatic transmission. Exclusive to the French C1 and 108 is the more powerful 1.2-liter VTi 82 with a fuel consumption of 4.3 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. The C1 Swiss & Me is a show special with all-round body cladding, similar to the Opel Adam Rocks.

Citroën C4 Cactus

The C4 Cactus is another highlight of the show. The bold-looking compact crossover focuses on simplicity. The C4 Cactus, which shares its platform with the C3 compact hatchback, C3 Picasso MPV and C-Elysée compact sedan, has a base weight of just 965 kg thanks to weight-saving measures, like downsized engines, high-strength steel, an aluminium bonnet and a one-piece rear seat. Its length is 4.16 meters, the width is 1.73 meters and the height 1.48 meters. Ten different colors, four hues for the Airbump and three different themes for the interior can be chosen. Base engine is the 1.0 three-cylinder turbocharged e-VTI 82 with CO2 emissions below 100 g/km, followed by the 1.2 three-cylinder turbocharged e-THP 110, the e-HDi 92 and the super frugal BlueHDI 100 with CO2 emissions of just 82 g/km. The optional robotized semi-automatic transmission (ETG5) should swift smoother than before.

Citroën C5 CrossTourer

The Citroën C5 has been in production for many years, but a successor won’t arrive soon. To keep it attractive, Citroën launched the C5 CrossTourer with body cladding on the wheel arches and slightly raised ground clearance. The engine line-up ranges from the 1.6 e-HDi (115 hp) with lowered CO2 emissions of 109 g/km to the 2.2 HDi (200 hp). Citroën doesn’t offer four-wheel drive versions.
