Look-a-like: Kia Stinger and…

The Kia Stinger is probably our favorite car to debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and with good reason – it is a powerful, RWD 5-door coupe which shows that Kia is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with Audi and BMW. Most important, though – it looks great, with a squat stance afforded by its width and low height, as well as a swept-back proportions that make it look as though it’s going fast even when it’s standing still. And it’s exactly that last part, those unique proportions, that to my eyes owe a debt of gratitude to another great-looking car, and not coincidentally a part-rival which the Kia will undercut significantly on price, if not looks…

Look-a-like: GAC GS7/GS8 and…

GAC GS8 and its smaller brother GS7 (which made its debut in Detroit this week), are two of the more eye-catching cars to come from a Chinese manufacturer recently. What makes them stand out is that they have something that many Chinese (and, for that matter, other) cars lack – a clean and confident design that’s instantly recognizable thanks to a memorable lights and grille treatment that, with familiarity, might evolve into the “GAC family look”. That said, despite the end-product being pretty unique-looking, from the front the cars remind me more than a bit of a well-established American SUV…

Look-a-like Retro: 1997 Subaru Forester and…

Let me be the first to admit – I love the original Subaru Forester. I love its boxy styling, complete with a very Mini-esque upright windscreen, I love its classless appeal, and the fact that it looks just as well when covered in mud as it does just after a good scrub. And while Subaru has taken the model in a very different direction since the first generation, turning it into a pretty standard Toyota RAV4 / Honda CR-V competitor, the original Forester was quite an influential car – along with its larger Outback brother, it was one of the original “raised wagons” that are proving so popular today. And just the other day I realized that the Forester bares a striking similarity to another Japanese car from that era…

Look-a-like: Mercedes-Benz E-class Coupe and…

Last week Mercedes-Benz released first pictures for the new E-class Coupe, and you’d be forgiven for reacting to them with a massive shrug. After all, we’ve seen it all before – it looks like a larger C-class Coupe, which itself was a shrunken S-class Coupe. That said, the new car arguably looks best of the three – not as bloated as its big brother, but better-proportioned than its baby brother. Still, it’s not the obvious similarity to its stablemates that our regular reader Behta pointed out…

Look-a-like: Jaguar i-Pace and…

Jaguar faced a tough decision when designing its first EV: either follow the successful Tesla Model S template, or go with a more original concept. While I’m sure the former option looked attractive to them, given the Tesla’s market success and, aruguably, the need to give the XJ replacement a stronger USP, the company ended up taking the bold step of venturing into a market that, until recently, would have been unthinkable for the brand: a sporty crossover. I admire as much – it takes guts, and, given how the concept looks, the final product will probably end up being one of the better-looking EVs out there. The problem is that, unless some parts of the design change substantially from the concept, it won’t be all that original…

Look-a-like: Audi A3 sedan and…

Audi A3 rear

The Audi A3 sedan is a good-looking car: surprisingly well-proportioned for a compact sedan, more interesting than the “seen it before” hatchback, and nicely compact compared to its overlong and boring bigger brother, the A4. One of the better aspects of its design is the rear, and especially the aggressively squinty tail lights, which look much better than the boring lamps on the A4, or the weirdly frowning-looking ones on the A6. But the A3 sedan is not the only car that sports such aggressive lamps at the rear, to the benefit of the overall design.

Look-a-like: Fiat 124 Spyder and…

Since the Fiat 124 Spyder came out pages upon pages have been written comparing it to its twin, the ND Mazda Miata (MX-5). The final consensus seems to be that the Italian company did just enough to give its version a unique visual character, which distinguishes it from the Japanese model. However, such a direct comparison misses another clear similarity…

Look-a-like: Kia Sportage and…

kia sportage

The third-generation Kia Sportage was a very handsome beast. With its squat proportions, aggressive “tiger nose” grille and shallow glass house, it would not have looked out-of-place if it had been badged an Audi, BMW or even Porsche. This made the reveal of its successor all the more of a disappointment – the previously sharp lines had been smoothed out, the standout proportions brought more into the mainstream, but most importantly the aggressive nose had been replaced with something much weaker. I think it’s clear that Kia’s designers were trying to make the Sportage look a bit like the Porsche Cayenne, but I fear they accidentally made it look like quite another car…

Look-a-like: Jeep Compass and…

When the new Jeep Compass made its debut it was immediately clear it was a handsome little beast. It design managed to successfully shrink the best design cues from its larger brother, the Grand Cherokee, (aggressive and instantly-recognizable front, squared-off wheel-arches, elegant proportions), while at the same time incorporating a little extra “something” with its optional “floating roof” and the chrome strip that delineates it. But it was the bottom line of the side windows that caught my eye – I was sure I had seen it somewhere before!
