Highlights:

  • Segment up 1% YTD, gains 0,3 percentage points to reach 11,3% share of the European new car market.
  • Nissan Qashqai still in control of the segment, despite losing 13% YTD, consolidates its lead in Q3
  • Ford Kuga surprise #3 in Q3, as new generation hasn’t hit showrooms yet, so successful sell out of old model
  • That leaves VW Tiguan down to 4th place in Q3 (sales estimated as split of Allspace not reported, which should be about 17% of total Tiguan sales)
  • Hyundai Tucson relatively strong at just -5% YTD despite its age. Sister model Kia Sportage is down 12%, but at least outsold the Toyota C-HR in Q3
  • Renault Kadjar back in positive YTD, but outsold by the Skoda Karoq in Q3
  • Citroen C5 Aircross outsells platform sibling Opel/Vauxhall Grandland X and Seat Ateca in Q3, leapfrogs Jeep Compass in YTD ranking
  • Mazda CX-5 also outsells the Compass in Q3
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross remains a niche player, maxes out at 1,6% segment share
  • Subaru XV biggest loser YTD, down 32%
  • Mazda CX-30 arrives, lands at #18 after just 1 month of sales.

Midsized SUV segment

Highlights:

  • Segment up 16% YTD, gains 0,3 percentage points to reach 2,1% share of the European new car market.
  • Toyota RAV4 firmly in control of the segment lead, biggest winner of the segment at +31%
  • Skoda Kodiaq in 2ndplace ahead of Peugeot 5008, the only loser in the top-7
  • Mitsubishi Outlander up 29% despite being one of the oldest models in the top-7, helped by the PHEV version
  • VW Tiguan Allspace nearly outsold by its clone Seat Tarraco in Q3, just 300 sales between them (sales of the Allspace are estimated as split from regular Allspace not reported)
  • Honda CR-V holds on to 6thplace YTD as new generation arrives late in Europe. Hybrid version should give the nameplate a boost
  • Nissan X-Trail crashing down the ranking, but September sales were up again. Sister model Renault Koleos confirmed to have failed in Europe due to lack of gasoline version.

“outsold by its clone Seat Tarraco”
    .
I recently saw one and really thought it was a VW Tiguan Allspace. Seems like at least 20 thousand people don’t care about Seat having a different design from the inside and the outside. Totally unnecessary in my opinion and by doing so they are ignoring Seat as a brand. Fortunately, there are other companies able to distinguish between their brands.

The Mazda CX-5 should be classified as a mid-sized SUV along with the CR-V and the RAV4, its main competitors, not with siblings the CX-3 and CX-30. I own a CX-5 and previously owned a CR-V. They are very comparable. Further, the plan is for the CX-5 to grow bigger with the next model as Mazda will add a model below it and above the CX-30 to produce at the Alabama plant.
