Mahindra

Mahindra-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeMahindra is an Indian manufacturer of cars and SUV’s, and the owner of South Korean automaker SsangYong since 2011 and of the Italian design house Pininfarina since 2015. The company exports SUV’s and pick-up trucks to a number of European countries, mainly to Greece, Hungary and Italy, and it has had plans to expand to other Southern and Eastern European countries in the future.

Sales and market share have remained marginal, it has four models on offer: Goa (known as Scorpio in India) SUV and pick-up, and the XUV500, Bolero and Thar SUV’s. The latter is built under license of the Willy’s Jeep, the predecessor of the Wrangler.

The company had plans to start exporting its next generation Reva small electric car to Europe in 2014. This vehicle has a 100 km range on its Lithium-Ion batteries and a top speed of 90 km/h. It had already been sold in the UK under the G-Wiz name, and it enjoyed some popularity in London, where it was not officially recognized as a car, but as a quadricycle for tax purposes and to avoid the requirement to pass the EU crash test, which it wouldn’t. It became famous among car enthusiasts when Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson thrashed it in a review for its lack of safety and “innate hatefulness“. Exports of the Reva never materialized.

Mahindra started selling cars in Europe in 2006 and sales peaked in 2011 at 565 units, before plunging the next year to less than half of that figure. In 2013, sales rebounded to 337 units, of which 258 were the XUV500 SUV. It was back above 500 units again in 2015, but there are still no plans to expand the line-up or enter new markets and sales slightly dipped again in 2016.
