China car sales analysis June 2016

China-car-sales-graph-June_2016The Chinese car market is back in booming territory in June with sales up 20% to just over 1,7 million units of locally produced models, with a Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Selling Rate of 22 million units, up a million over the last two months. The first half total now stands at 10,6 million sales, an increase of 11,1% over the first half of 2015. Crossover and SUV sales jumped 41% to 632.300 units on the previous year, as MPV sales also surged at +35% to 170.400 units. As familiar by now, sedans showed a slower improvement at +8,9% to 925.100 sales. Once again, the share of local brands drops again after beginning the year with a bang, standing at 37,7% in June, with a first half share of 40,4%, still slightly higher than the 40,1% of the full year 2015.

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Buick_Envision-SUVThe Wuling Hongguang is once again the best selling model in China, after it was briefly outsold by the Haval H6 in April, but the three Volkswagen models in the top-8 (Lavida, Jetta and Sagitar) all show improvements of around 70%, as the VW brand is back to outperform the market and regain some of its lost market share. Behind the H6, the GAC Trumpchi is the only other crossover (and the fastest growing model) in the top-10, with the Buick Envision and Baojun 560 the only other crossovers in the top-15, as a slew of recently launched local models are storming the charts quickly, most notably the Changan CX70, breaking the 10.000 sales threshold, the Geely Boyue at over 8.000 sales for the first time and the BYD Yuan at over 6.000 sales after having been launched in March.

European brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-BMW_X1L-SUVVolkswagen grows with double digits for the third time this year, including the first two months when it lost volume, and still does so while lacking crossovers and SUVs. In fact, the 18,7% increase is almost solely due to the aforementioned top-8 placed sedans, as the brand’s only locally produced crossover Tiguan is down while customers are awaiting the new generation. Sister brand Audi boosts sales 25,8% as all of its locally produced models increase with the exception of the A6L. At Mercedes-Benz, the E-Class is down to its lowest monthly volume in more than 3 years as it is also preparing for a new generation. Still, the brand’s other models are growing fast enough to clock a 20,9% increase in June, although that’s the slowest growth rate for Mercedes-Benz since November 2014. BMW is up 9% thanks to the introduction of the latest X1, as the 2-Series Active Tourer is stuck at around 1.500 monthly units. Its closest competitor VW Golf Sportsvan drops to just over 2.000 sales in its third month of sales, its lowest figure so far, indicating that Chinese buyers may not be ready to embrace premium priced 5-seater MPVs as they’ve done so with cheap 7-seaters from local brands.

Skoda accelerates its slow but steady growth in China with a 30,1% increase as contrary to current trends all of its sedans improve while the Yeti slows down. Contrastingly, volume at Peugeot is down 18%, the smallest loss of the year, as sales at sister brand Citroën are down just 4%, also the smallest loss since January. Luxury brand DS is loses 43,8% and is now down 19% for the year as none of its 4 models sell more than 500 units in June, with an embarrassing 99 units for the awfully planned DS 4S hatchback. PSA really needs to get its act together if it wants to succeed in China, because it’s in danger of losing out quickly if it doesn’t start launching the right products in this market. French rival Renault sells almost 2.000 units of its Kadjar crossover in its fourth month of sales, although that’s still behind on its ambitious target. Land Rover sales are down on last month, but unfortunately we don’t have comparative data of last year yet.

American brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Cadillac_XT5-SUVAt General Motors, Chevrolet continues to lose volume while the already much bigger Buick brand keeps growing, although the latter loses market share for the first time this year with sales up “just” 14,4% as the big improvements of the Weilang, Excelle XT/GT and Envision offset losses of the Opel-based Encore and Regal. Chevrolet is down 16,5%, the smallest loss of the year as sales of the Cruze have stabilized but the other models are still down, most notably the Sail. Luxury brand Cadillac keeps storming the charts as it tops 8.000 monthly sales for the second month in a row. The new XT5 crossover and a big jump in XTS sales are to credit for the big month, as the ATS-L is down and the all-new CT6 doesn’t seem able to break through the 500 monthly units.

Ford loses volume for the third consecutive month, and the losses are accelerating at -20% in June. The Escort and Edge are the only two models to add sales, as the Mondeo and Kuga lose more than half of their volume and the Taurus has dropped below 1.000 monthly sales in the second quarter after starting off promisingly in its first five months of sales. Jeep launches the locally produced Renegade in China and combined with continued strong demand for the Cherokee that helps the brand cross the 10.000 sales of local production for the first time.

Japanese brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Nissan_Qashqai-2015_SUVA change of fortune for the Japanese brands, as the Big 3 Japanese brands all lose market share in June, although barely for Nissan at +19,7% thanks to the Sylphy, Qashqai and Lannia, while Honda’s impressive growth of the past 15 months has stalled, up “just” 13,6% despite continued growth of its small crossover duo XR-V and Vezel. Meanwhile, Toyota even sees its sales drop for the first time this year at -7,6%. Small improvements of its compact sedans Corolla and Levin can’t offset losses across the rest of the line-up. Mazda is up 10% on the launch of its all-new crossover CX-4, already the brand’s second best selling model and immediately outselling the CX-5 in its first month of sales. Without the new launch, the brand would be down 20%. Contrastingly, after losing a lot of ground in recent months, the two smaller Japanese brands show signs of a recovery in June, with Suzuki ending a 16-month losing streak of year-over-year declines with a 6,8% improvement mostly thanks to the Vitara small crossover launched late last year. Similarly, Mitsubishi ends a 15-month losing streak with a 21,9% increase thanks to the facelifted ASX, the model that still commands 89% of brand sales. For the first half, Mitsubishi has still lost over 40% of its volume of last year.

South-Korean brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Hyundai_Elantra_Lingdong-sedanAfter cutting prices across their line-up, the South-Koreans turn their fate around with an impressive 61,6% increase at Hyundai thanks to the Tucson crossover and the two latest of the four available generations of the Elantra: the Langdon and the recently launched Elantra Lingdong. As a result, the brand is back into positive territory year-to-date for the first time since the start of 2015. Sister-brand Kia is still in the red year-to-date at -5,8% but won’t be for long if it continues the 20% increase it showed in June, boosted by the new generation Sportage, called KX5 in China, and a rebound of the K3 sedan.

Chinese brands

Auto-sales-statistics-China-BAIC-Senova_X35-SUVAfter a slight hiccup last month, Baojun is back to its familiar growth rate at 43,5%, even though the 560 crossover sells “just” 18.000 units for the second month in a row, after enjoying six months of 30.000+ of which two 40.000+ sales months. Competition from other low-priced local crossovers is clearly intensifying. BAIC more than doubles its sales of last June with an increase of 127% on the back of a fast-paced product launch cycle, as its line-up has grown by no less than 8 nameplates in the past twelve months, most notably the 3 additional small crossovers under the Senova sub-brand. Sister brand Changhe grows by more than fivefold thanks to the Q25, which is built on the same platform as the Beijing Senova X25. Geely and Dongfeng both add more than 50% to their sales, the former boosted by the Boyue SUV and the Emgrand GS crossover/hatchback launched just last month, and the latter helped by strong demand for its Fengguang 330 and 370 MPVs and the Fengguang 580, also launched last month.

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Zotye_SR7-SUVFurther down the ranking, the Roewe 360 sedan helps the brand to a 90% increase, while both Zotye and Haima add over 66% to their volumes of June 2015. Zotye benefits from a number of new models, most notably the Damai X5 SUV and the SR7 Audi Q3 clone, but also the Z700 large sedan which has its best month since its introduction in the beginning of the year. The new generation Haima S5 is credited with most of the growth of its brand. Lifan has finally ended its 11-month losing streak, thanks to the Maiwei 7-passenger SUV now in its third month of sales and already the brand’s best selling model by far. Haval keeps growing quickly after lowering the prices on its best selling H6 SUV, as namesake Great Wall brand is down to a single model and will soon focus on crossovers and SUVs only.

New models

After a very busy season for product launches, this time of the year the number of new models arriving in Chinese showrooms traditionally slows down a bit. In June, just 2 models were introduced, unsurprisingly both are crossovers but indeed surprisingly none are from local brands.

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Jeep_Renegade-SUVJeep has started local production of the Renegade small crossover in China, its second model after launching the Cherokee last November. A third model will follow by the end of the year: the C-segment crossover that will replace both the Patriot and Compass, which regularly lead the charts of best selling import models in China. The Renegade is produced in a new GAC-FCA factory in Guangzhou and sells 1.678 units in its first month, compared to just over 2.100 for the Cherokee, and I don’t expect it to outsell its bigger sibling anytime soon, as it is competing in a lower price range at a starting price of 141.800 Yuan (€ 19.400,- / US$21,800) with much heavier competition from local brands, which offer bigger models for a similar price, for example the very successful Geely Boyue with a starting price of 98.800 Yuan (running up to 157.800 Yuan). The Boyue is more than 25 centimeters longer than the Renegade (4,52 meters, similar to the Mazda CX-5 vs. 4,25 for the Renegade) and its design and fit & finish are almost on the level of import brands. The Chinese Renegade is powered by either a 1,4-liter turbocharged petrol engine mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox or a 2-liter petrol engine with the well-known 9-speed automatic transmission, and is available with front-wheel drive as well as 4-wheel drive.

Auto-sales-statistics-China-Mazda_CX4_SUVThe China-only (for now) Mazda CX-4 is already a huge success for the Japanese brand, as mentioned above. In its first month it sells 6.347 units, making it the brand’s best selling crossover and the second best selling model overall. It also doesn’t seem to cannibalize too much on the CX-5, as combined sales of the two models are still more than double the tally of the CX-5 last year. The CX-4 is produced in Changchun by the FAW-Mazda Joint-Venture which also makes the Mazda6, and is marketed as a crossover-coupe version of the CX-5. Its sleek roof-line and longer looks give it a sportier appearance than its sibling, and that should explain a lot of its popularity with Chinese car-buyers. It’s a bit longer than the CX-5 at 2,63 meters vs. 4,56, but it’s also 17 cm lower. The CX-4 powered by either a 2-liter or a 2,5-liter SkyActive petrol engine, both combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
