European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Passenger Van segment

 

Mercedes_Benz_V_Class-european_car_sales-2015-large_passenger_van_segmentThe large passenger van segment in Europe slows down its double digit growth in Q3 of 2015, up 8% in the quarter and still +13% year-to-date. The main reason for the slowdown is the model changeover from the Volkswagen Transporter/Multivan from the T5 generation to the T6, which causes the segment leader to lose 34% of its volume in Q3, which sets it virtually flat for the year so far. The Fiat Ducato holds on to its 2nd place, keeping the surging Mercedes-Benz V-Class at bay, even though these two models had almost identical sales in the third quarter. If we add the V-Class’s “tradesman”-version Vito Combi into the mix, the Mercedes-Benz twins outsell the Ducato to take the #2 spot. US sales 2015 Q1 – Q3 Minicar segment

The Minicar segment could not maintain its growth from the first half of the year, and shrank by 9% in the third quarter of 2015 compared to the same period of 2014. This means that so far this year the segment has only grown by 3%, behind the overall sales growth of 5% , and may yet end up shrinking overall by the time 2015 is over. While at least some of this reversal is due to the continuing low gas prices which promote purchases of large cars, one has the feeling that it is also due to the cars available being a rather uninspiring and aging bunch…

European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 exotic and sports car segments

Lamborghini_Aventador-Huracan-european_car_sales-2015-exotic_car_segmentThe exotic car segment in Europe slightly recovers from its slowdown in the first half, as Q3 sales were down 4%, lifting the year-to-date score to -11%. Much of the lost volume is due to the changeover from the Ferrari 458 Italia to the new Ferrari 488 GTB, which is happening very slowly. The outgoing 458 is already down 28%, losing 326 units of volume, while the 488 is off to a slow start, at 62 units this quarter. That means the Bentley Continental GT is able to take undisputed control of the segment, with sales down only 2% so far this year.… Continue Reading …

European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Premium Large SUV segment

BMW-X5-luxury-SUVSales of premium large SUVs in Europe continue to boom, as the segment grew by an impressive 38% in Q3 and +18% year-to-date, helped by a number of model changeovers and continued popularity of existing models. While the leader of the segment BMW X5 loses some market share, it remains unchallenged this year, as it adds over 2.500 units to its lead over the #2 Range Rover Sport. The Volkswagen Touareg has an impressive quarter as it consolidates its third place, outselling its corporate sibling Porsche Cayenne by more than 1.700 units. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class loses another position as it is being facelifed and renamed Mercedes-Benz GLE, which makes its first appearance in the ranking at #14 at just one month of sales.

However, by the end of the year these last three models are in danger of losing out to the surging Audi Q7, whose new generation scored an impressive 2nd place in Q3 and if it continues like this, the Q7 will take the bottom spot of the segment podium for 2015. European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Premium Midsized and Compact SUV segments

European-sales-premium_compact_SUV_segment-Volvo_XC60Sales of premium midsized SUVs in Europe slow down their impressive growth rate in Q3, with sales up 13% for the quarter, compared to 29% in the first half of 2015. This means the segment has already added over 50.000 units of volume so far this year. Much of this growth comes from new entrants to the segment, but also from the segment leader this year: the Volvo XC60. With an increase of 29% and almost 13.000 added sales, the XC60 looks unbeatable for the rest of the year , even though the Audi Q5 outsold it in August and was only 1.000 units behind in the third quarter.

The Range Rover Evoque has suddenly lost a third of its volume in Q3, after gaining 11% in the first half. The Evoque will be facelifted slightly, without much changes to its exterior design, and the addition of a convertible won’t make much of an impact sales-wise, as our readers agreed in the poll. … Continue Reading …

European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Limousine segment

mercedes_Benz_S_Class-european_car_sales-2015-limousine_segmentThe limousine segment in Europe stays in a subdued mode in Q3 of 2015, still down 9% for both the quarter and the first nine months. With the Mercedes-Benz S-Class controlling almost 45% of all limousine sales in Europe, it’s no surprise that the segment depends heavily on fluctuations in that model’s demand. As the S-Class is now in its second year of the new generation, a 9% decrease in Q3 and -4% for the year so far isn’t too bad, especially considering the rest of the top-6 fares even worse. Bear in mind that the Benz is probably also helped by a handful sales of the new S-Class Coupe, which isn’t split from the sedan in our statistics. Its traditionally biggest rival BMW 7-series has already revealed its upcoming new generation, which promises a ton of new technology and features that should help it topple the S-Class dominance in 2016. European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Premium Large segment

Audi_A6_Avant-european_car_sales-2015-premium_large_car_segmentThe premium large car segment in Europe has found the way back up again, with sales improving 4,4% in Q3, bringing the year-to-date score to -2%, from -5% in the first half of the year. The ongoing three-way battle between the Audi A6, BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class appears to be decided for 2015, with the A6 extending its lead in Q3, even if the 5-series gained 9,1% this quarter and sold just 300 units less than its rival. This also put the 5-er well ahead of the E-Class to consolidate its #2 spot that had been under fire in Q2.

For the A6, which hadn’t led the segment since 2007, it’s likely to be a short stint on top, as both of its main competitors are being completely renewed next year. Mercedes will go first, around the end of the second quarter, and BMW will follow shortly with the new 5-series. Audi won’t renew the A6 until a year later.… Continue Reading …

European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Premium Midsize segment

Mercedes-Benz-C-Class-auto-sales-statistics-EuropeThe premium midsized car segment is up 8% in the first three quarters of 2015, boosted by updated models and a new entrant to the segment. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been the best selling premium midsized car all year and isn’t likely to hand over that title by the end of the year. In fact, it has only strengthened its lead over the BMW 3-series, which was outsold by the Audi A4 in Q3, even though the Audi was in the middle of a model changeover to the new generation. The gap between the two is about 6.600 units, so I don’t think the A4 can close that gap in the next three months. But for 2016, the 3-series is in serious trouble.

European sales 2015 Q1-Q3 Premium Compact segment

 

Compact_Premium_Car-segment-European-sales-2014-Audi_A3The premium compact car segment continues to accelerate in 2015, with sales up 18,5% in Q3 to pull the year-to-date score up to +12%, mostly thanks to new model introductions, as the top-4 all show single-digit declines. Almost one-in-four models sold in the segment have an Audi A3 badge, in a similar fashion that its corporate sibling Volkswagen Golf controls the mainstream compact segment. However, bear in mind that the advantage of more than 50.000 units the A3 holds over its nearest rival is somewhat misleading as Audi sells both the three-door, five-door Sportback, sedan and convertible under the same badge. If you combine the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback with the CLA sedan and wagon (shooting brake), they would add up to 135.872 units, less than 20.000 behind the A3.… Continue Reading …

Kia_Sorento-Hyundai_Santa_Fe-european_car_sales-2015-large_SUV_segmentThe large SUV segment in Europe keeps recovering from their years of declines with sales up 33% in Q3 and 30% so far in 2015. Two thirds of the increase is thanks to a single model: the new generation Kia Sorento, which manages to topple its corporate sibling Hyundai Santa Fe from the top spot of the segment for the first time in 4 years. Behind these two South-Korean models which take two thirds of the segment volume, the Toyota Land Cruiser in under fire from the Mitsubishi Pajero, which had already taken third place in Q1 but lost it to the Land Cruiser in Q2.
